How to remove Win32:Malware-gen

Hi,

A PC has been infected with Win32:Malware-gen.

History: It wasn’t detected by Avast Internet Security 2015 when I clicked on the email attachment but Avast notified me of malicious sites being contacted. I forwarded the email to scan@virustotal.com and the results came back that the latest Avast virus sig-checker had detected it. I guess clicked on the attachment before the virus sig-file had been updated to detect it.

Action taken I’ve disconnected the PC from the network and changed passwords.

What should I do now?
I’d like to remove the malware. I couldn’t find anything in the Avast software about how to remove malware, and nothing on the Avast website either. I guess they only handle detection and not removal.

But I found this thread:
b) http://www.malwareremovalguides.info/win32-malware-gen-removal-instructions/

And also this thread:
a) https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

What would you recommend I do next? E.g. follow thread a) ?
Alan

Follow the instructions and attach the logs
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Thanks Eddy,

Install the progamme and select update
I’ve switched of the internet on the machine. How can I configure Avast to only access white-listed websites (avira.com and malwarebytes.org) so that the the virus can’t do any more damage?

Could you download and run this programme, Avast will block any bad sites whilst you are connected

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

[*]Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]Select additions at the bottom
[*]Press Scan button.

[*]It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
[*]Please attach both logs generated.

hi Essexboy,
Here are the logs.
I’m really grateful for your support,
Alan

OK lets get at it. You still have Norton installed so I would recommend that you uninstall it https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/FRSTfix.JPG

Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Here’s the fixlog. I’ll now run adwcleaner and post the log next.

after rebooting first (as instructed by the fix program)…

Here are the results of the adwcleaner. I ran it in admin mode but with the internet connection switched off.

How is the computer behaving now ?

I haven’t opened the internet yet. I’m running an avast full-scan just to make sure nothing came in while I was repairing and I’ll let you and your team know tomorrow.
I removed most of the logs from this thread for the time being.

A zillion thanks!
That seems to have cleared up the problem.

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version
