how to rename a VIR file?

i want to rename my mp3 file which turned into VIR when moved to the MOVED folder of AVAST… but how?

I assume it was something like media.mp3 but now it is media.mp3.vir ?

Just right click on the file in the moved folder and select rename, now remove the .vir and the name should be the same as before ?

But why the file was renamed by avast? Is it infected? Was it a false positive detection? ::slight_smile:

Isn’t there an option to rename and that option I believe appends the .vir to the original file name, but I guess we will have to wait for some more information from hardcore misery.

most of my media files, turned into .VIR file when i scanned using avast…

after there that scanning, avast, displayed some list of files that were unable to scan…

it is because of they were “password protected” and “theres an internal program error”

because i’m a newbie and a fool, i did chose the action, MOVED… it is also because of, those files were unable to repair, scan and CHEST, so the only option i can do is to move the file on the MOVED folder of avast…and that was my wrong choice when i chose to move some media files…

when my PC restarted, poof, my moved media files were gone on its original position, and was renamed into .vir

i did try to simply rename the file by right clicking the file and choose rename, but it does not change the “file name” VIR file… o yes i can rename the file, ie…

song.mp3 if i click it i can see on its details on the left corner, it states that it is a VIR file.
i can play this mp3 with OPEN WITH option, but what if i’m gonna burn this mp3 or play it on a mp3 player… theres conflict when i’m changing its bitrate by using dBpowerAMP…

is there any SIMPLE way to restore it? i doubt that even i uninstall AVAST those VIR files will be fixed…

avast doesn't do anything autonomously, it must first have detected them as being infected and offered you the choice of several options.

Why did you choose to move them, did avast detect them as infected, if so what was the malware name and the original location, e.g. (C:\Folder\sub-folder-name\infected-file-name.xxx) ? Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

How many are we talking about ?
What happens if you copy some of them back to the original location ?

Unfortunately the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\moved folder is outside the avast chest and doesn’t have the same functionality as the chest, e.g. the ability to restore to the original location. Files in the Moved folder I believe have to be manually copied back to the original location.

Usually the default option is Move to Chest, this is by far the safest/best first action to choose.

From your image the file type still appears to be .mp3 but something would appear to have changed the internal file properties, that is where the information displayed in your tool-tip image comes from. I believe there are malware that doest this to media files, so I don’t know if this may be a factor.

How long have you had avast ?

I did a test and moved a sample into the Moved folder, I was able to rename it (drop the .vir) and drag it to the original folder and that lost the Type: VIR File bit.

If that doesn’t work you may have to associate the program that you want to open this file, e.g. your media player, see image.

i’ve alread solved it… thanks
