I just downloaded paid 5 internet security, now my computer is constantly trying to connect to internet, i am on dialup with just one telephone line and like to be disconnected at times, working on documents. What application is causing this? When i had the free 4.0, it would NOT auto connect me…did all updates when I logged on to the internet. thankyou :-\
Start by letting avast know that you use dial-up; avast Settings, Updates, Update parameters, check the I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem.
I’m on dial-up and avast doesn’t connect unless I open the avastUI, or rather try to connect (as I don’t allow automatic dial-up connections ‘always connect’) and displays the Dial-up connection window for me to accept or cancel.
THANKS DAVID…that is how i have my boxes checked…what does your DETAILS and PROXY SETTINGS LOOK LIKE? FYI…this is my first time posting/replying…i checked the Moderator link and started typing in my question to you…might of sent then off in error…sorry about that…not meaning to report your message…i really appreciate your help…thanks
Details are default settings, except I set my auto-update every value to 120.
My proxy settings are set to Direct connection (no proxy), which doesn’t relate to your connection method (and should be unrelated to your issue), but if you use a proxy or not. If you don’t use a proxy this is what you should set it to or if you use one then you need to set the Specify proxy server values…
You say avast actually connects, if so you need to tighten your Network connections settings in Internet Explorer, see image of my settings. This if an application tries to connect it displays the connection window, but doesn’t dial automatically, the ‘Always dial my default connection,’ option would connect I believe without displaying the connection window.
David…i have my settings set just like yours…i dont know if the new program is trying to go out to the internet to scan or look for updates. When i start my computer, the avast orange Icon first appears down on my toolbar and then my dialup box starts and begins dialing…i have double checked my settings…very frustrating…i have rebooted twice since our writings…
David…i know you are offline now…as you are in the UK…I think i found the problem…was able to get a window to pop up showing me which website my computer was trying to connect to: db11.spamcatcher.net…it had to do with my spam portion of this new avast program …which is not on the free version of AVAST…i disabled that and now my computer does NOT automatically log on. Thanks for the time you took in replying and helping me. Have a good night…debra
You’re welcome.
Obviously this new anti-spam functionality wasn’t in 4.8, so no issue there; though I have no idea why if your settings are the same as mine the connection window doesn’t appear and wait your clicking Dial, etc.
I wondered if there is a setting to limit this checking and there is, see image extract from the Help file, Spam Protection, Expert Settings, Retrieve new rules. So you should be able to tweak that or set it to manual and allow you to use this function rather than have to disable it.
avast does not dial, start a connection or disconnect. Some other program is doing so.
avast only updates if a connection was previously established.
Thanks David and TECH. I have definately traced it to my spam part of the new program. I had to reactivate it on AVAST…as it would take a long time for my outlook mail to open. Since activating it, my mail opens immediately. I have also set the new rules to 43,000 seconds…that should slow it down. Dont know what i checked, but now I at least get a prompt when my computer wants to connect to that spam.net . So for now, my computer stays disconnected when I want to be offline. I want to thank each of you for responding. NOw i dont feel so alone having access to this forum…have a great night/day. ;D
You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
