Ever since Avast introduced their new free version and announced it with a pop up tab, I cannot do this away. How can I stop this unpleasant behaviour?

You can disable update info in avast! > Settings > Update > Details > Show notification box after automatic updates.
What is it that you can’t do - I’m taking a bit of a swing at this, you don’t want to update to the latest version ?
If that is correct then the above suggestion won’t stop it notifying you that a new program version is available.
That would be avastUI > Settings > Update - scroll down to Program and click the Settings (blue text). Setting it to manual update should normally stop you getting the notifications.
More importantly knowing why you can’t do this, may help us to overcome the problem in updating.
Thanks both. Unfortunately I cannot find the paths that you indicate. Presently have v. 9.0 installed.
GUI>Settings>Update>Details>untick the box
Or
GUI>Settings>Appearance>scroll down to “Pop-Ups”>adjust duration
Note: Zero (0) equals forever. Lowest duration is two (2) seconds. 
If you can answer the questions I asked, we can get a better idea what the problem is and a suggested solution (of the three different ones already offered).
The easiest way is to install the latest version, which is 2014.9.0.2021
You can’t have version 9.0 installed because there never was such a version:

Sorry for being late in responding but I was travelling.
Let me say that the Mac version of the new AVAST does not have the same preferences window as the ones shown here. There is no “Update” button/menu……
I can’t believe there is no way to stop this annoying feature.
