How to tell Avast never to access the Internet?

Hello everybody

Is it possible to configure Avast (I am still using the version 7.0.1474 and do not allow update of the program - ever) - newer to attempt to access the Internet?

I’m getting bored having it blocked each time with my firewall…

Not possible and there is no reason to still use a non supported version.

Do you click ... remeber my answer?

Most AV are designed to auto update and protect you at all time, maybe ClamAV is the one for you

Yes I do know about the “remember my answer” option.
I rather prefer not to use it - not in the case of Avast process.
It is because I want to do allow the update sometimes (about 3 times per one year) to get the update of the virus definition files.
If I click on “no” and then “remember my answer” then I could not perform that virus definition update (about a couple of times per a year)
(Not without accessing Sygate FireWall option to change the remembered option).

Please note that I have a couple of computers, I do my web surfing A LOT and I tend to keep Avast protection OFF in ALL times, and about a couple of times per a year I do update the virus definitions and then perform a full system scan… And never ever was any viruses on my computers.

On the other hand:
While Avast.Setup.exe process does performs an update…
Which it would do SEVERAL TIMES per a single DAY, my computer lags for 15 minutes or so (it uses about 0.7GB of my RAM memory while updating).
This is the main reason why I prefer to keep the update OFF at all times.
I need my computer resources for MYSELF not for PROTECTION (I know what I’m doing).
Antivirus is there… just in worst case scenario… And never ever did actually I need it!

And the NEW version of Avast tends to:

  • check and suggest drivers updates (not a job for any antivirus!)
  • check, and change internal settings of email application(s) without any notice (Netscape Messenger - root certificate - was modified by a setup of an new version of Avast) not allowed for an application to change the behavior of another application - especially without the notice)

So - I do not want to update Avast to the latest version.

In my personal experience - firewall is a must; Antivirus is just an option to the end-user
(But again - this is only my opinion)
I consider myself a “big boy” capable to look after myself on the World Wide Web.
Antivirus is just an - option for me. NOT a part in the everyday life.

Then uninstall and use online scanners ... problem solved

You find online scanners from F-Secure / ESET / TrendMicro …

Don’t install a resident AV if that’s not what you want.

A few notes:

  1. If you update your antivirus a few times a year, it’s completely useless (most virus threats appear and disappear faster than that - so your program would detect stuff that is no longer relevant and miss the stuff that is) - so you can really just uninstall it
  2. More and more detections are moved to the cloud - so using Avast in offline mode is a significant limitation of its detection capabilities (even if fully updated!)
  3. New versions of the program occasionally optimize the update process - so it should be less resource-intensive on new versions than on version 7. (Plus, if you update your virus database once in a few months, of course the process will be much heavier than smaller updates installed every day.)

Yes agreed, that seems the logical resolution.
