Hello,
Thanks in advance
Right click on Avast system tray icon-Protection management (I translated that from Croatian).
I updated Nvidia driver without disabling Avast. However I had problem with downloading because
file was corrupted so I used downThemall Firefox addon (download manager) and everything was OK.
I also have updated my Nvidia drivers without disabling avast! The update was downloaded and automatically started without any issues at all.
You don’t need to disable avast! but, if you really want to, you can do so as abruptum stated - right-click on the avast! icon, choose “avast shields control”, and then choose the length of time you want the shields disabled (I would think 10 minutes should be sufficient).
Not sure why that would be needed. If avast would mistakenly detect NVIDIA drivers (false-positive) it would be equally bad to turn it on later - and if not, why bother.
You’ll get no problems with avast and NVidia updates, I installed the latest version 314.22 yesterday morning and it’s fine, as has been every NVidia update preceding it
Just wanted to point out, that many installers wanted to prevent any possible problems and suggest to disable antivirus during install. This might be true for some situations, such as very restricted HIPS module, that will warn you like crazy and let you make a wrong decision during install - but in general, its during copying or installing anything new to your computer, that you would like to let the antivirus to show its usefullness. To prevent you from installing something, which is not what you think it is etc.
Hi yes it is best to disable the av when installing video drivers or windows service packs. We have seen it before the av flags the files as infected false positive and when you go to reboot your system it wont boot. Why take that chance and yes I have had avast flag windows service packs as a virus and just deletes it before you can install it. The last one I think bitdef had and it made huges numbers of pc’s not work, to compenstate you they offered a extra year on there av LOL. It takes 2 seconds to disable it while you install why take the chance. Unless the AV program knows more than the people that made the service pack or drivers as they all recommend turning it off.
i sure would test the file at www.virustotal.com before i turn off my AV to install something
but i have never needed to do that!
That is incorrect information : if you had read the posts prior to your own this is not necessary and puts your system at risk of infection.
I never disable any antivirus to install as such discussed and have also never received any issues by doing so on many systems.
Hi well why then did 1000’s of pc’s go down during a vista sp update. I guess you know more than Microsoft they say disable it Nvidia says disable it. Just for fun do a search to see how many times a AV program has messed up a sp install or video driver install. I may have seen a bit more of this as I am 61 and have been in the pc business for 22 years. My main point is why take the chance when it is so simple to turn it off while you install. Senario you install a sp during the install the AV flags a false positive and dont tell me there are no false positive files as we see many of them. So that file does not get installed you go to reboot and of course your pc wont start. The only way your idea work’s is in a perfect world where programs dont mess up or find false positive files, and since Avast and all other AV program’s have a way to report a false positive file, I guess they do at times mark good files as bad dont you agree. So why take the Chance. You may change your mind when it happens to you as you say 90 % of the time you wont have a problem but then there is the other 10 % to deal with.
Nvidia doesn’t say to disable AV.I’ve updated drivers 20 times without any problems.
I’ve heard that is wise to disable AV when installing Service Packs.
Hi yes that is all I am saying why take the chance. Like we have to trust some sites and nvidia or ms are not going to put a virus in there downloads. And I guess this is Microsofts statment on it. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/troubleshoot-problems-installing-service-pack. And this is Nvidias recommendation http://www.nvidia.ca/object/driver_installation_hints.html
Whether or not you should disable your AV when installing/updating drivers has long been a subject of disagreement. I think, like lukor said, it may be recommended for prevention only, sort of a CYA. In this case, NVIDIA DOES suggest disabling your AV.
What is the point of having AV then?
Someone could say that is recommended to disable AV every time when you’re installing something.
AV should stop bad downloads/installs.I don’t need to be bothered with when or if I should disable
Avast.I guess this recommendation to disable AV should be part of installers and not hidden on some
sites.
Hi I am sorry I dont understand where you got install anything from , there are only a few things that should have the AV disabled to install like video card drivers and windows service packs. And it is as mentioned a precaution to make sure things install properly and files dont get flagged. If you can fix your own pc then do as you wish if you cant like student’s that are having a hard enough time making ends meet they dont need a service pack install getting messed up because of a AV program, they cant afford a pc shop. I know this as I did 35 students pc’s when a service pack failed because of false positive for free.
I’ve had to disable Avast when installing other complex software like VMware tools. Many software makers recommend it to prevent possible problems. I also set the firewall to block all traffic while Avast is off. Some things like updating firmware like on hard drives you only get one try. If it get’s corrupted the drive is bricked.
