How to turn off email scan

I have a client who cannot send emails but they can be received just fine. She uses DSL by SBC/Yahoo.

The error message is 4 lines of text that includes
“The server could not be found. (Account:account name, POPserver:‘mail’, Error Number: 0x800ccc0d)”

or it may say that login failed and similar text.

The Microsoft KB indicates that one possible problem is an antivirus program may cause this problem while scanning emails.

How do I turn of scanning in Avast? Do I just comment out some lines in the AVAST4.INI file?

I don’t have the setup Wizard to guide through setup steps as indicated by the Avast help system.

Uncheck the option to scan the outbound mail in the Internet Mail provider AND in the Outlook plugin.

How do I get to Resident Task Settings? I am using the free Avast version 5.7.

I also forgot to say that Yahoo works find both sending and receiving. It is when I try to use Outlook Express or Outlook that they cannot receive emails through the SBC/Yahoo server.

My client has Windows XP Home and 2Wire DSL modem.

It’s supposed that the avast version is 4.7.892.
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, choose the Internet Mail provider at left and then click ok on Customize button.
Go to the tabs and you’ll get all the settings.
Do the same for Outlook plugin.

Does Yahoo uses SSL or TSL connections, like GMail?
If so, take a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=10428.0 to see how to set up secure email with avast!.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL at home and support several other users who have the same. I haven’t seen this problem but I’ll try to duplicate it later tonight.

Mauserme, can you answer me… I’m lazy to research about ;D

Tech,

mauserme may have better information but, while the SBC/Yahoo service covers several domain names, the best I can find on searching is that none of them use SSL/TLS for email. All the mail servers covered use ports 110/25 for POP/SMTP.

However going back to original description of the error posted …

None of these services use a POP server just called ‘mail’. So it looks as though it could well be an improper setup of the mail account in Outlook and Outlook Express.

Since we do not know the domain name for the user (as in username@domain.net) we cannot suggest the correct server names but they are listed here:

Is this the error?

EDIT

I think that’s it too.

When I typed the smtp server name I was quite careful to enter smtp(dot)sbcglobal(dot)yahoo(dot)com several times but enlarging the error message shows I had smtp(comma)sbcglobal(dot)yahoo(comma)com

This did not happen with the pop server name and cutting and pasting the smtp name from a server list solved the problem for the outgoing mail. I’m at a loss as to how the comma’s got in there but it’s not avast! related since all is working well now without having made any changes to avast.

Yes - SSL by default, but its optional

mauserme

the link to which you directed us speaks only of Web access to mail via browser … this has nothing to do at all with SSL/TLS access via POP/SMTP.

It would appear to confirm my earlier post that there appears to be no SSL/TLS support provided in accessing of email via POP/SMTP for SBC/Yahoo in which the scanning of email by avast would be involved.

Yes, that’s true. I see I misinterpreted Tech’s question.

No problem.
Alanrf got the point.

btw - I’ve tested on 2 more computers and I’m not finding any conflicts.
