How to update Avast: Which program needs internet access?

Hello Forum,

I have blocked all internet traffic with my desktop firewall. Now I want to create rules which programs can access the internet. I figured out that I have to create a rule for setup\instup.exe. No I can download the virus definition. Are there other programs I have to give access to the internet? For updating the whole program, or for checking for updates?

You’ve to allow the following: AvastUI.exe, instup.exe, AvastSvc.exe und AvastEmUpdate.exe

Easy way is to set the firewall to ask what to do when traffic is detected.
If you see it is avast tell it to always allow it.

I know this method from my very old Kerio Firewall. I have searched in the internet for this Win Firewall settings.
They are here: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall\Customize Settings

  • Notify me when windows firewall blocks a new program.

Its activated the whole time, but I cant remember to have such questions. Hm…
