how to upload to ftp

I have followed the instructions for uploading (I have an open support ticket), but I have no technical know-how. I used the following which I found in the forum:
Don’t know if you have done this before - Upload any minidump or memory.dmp files, zipped to reduce size. Give the zip file you are uploading a unique name (e.g. m0unds-mem-dump.zip, etc), so they can identify it. It might not be a bad idea to create a text file (readme.txt) with any relevant information, avast topic, user name, etc. etc. in the zip file.

Upload the zip file to the ftp server ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming:

  • Using Internet Explorer, Connect to the link and drag the file into the Right pane and drop it, that starts the upload, you don’t have read access to this folder.
    Or
Upload it using the Run command-line in Windows: Windows Key + R (to get the run box), copy and paste this Code:explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incomingand drag the file into the window, from another explorer window.

I have gotten to the write-only box, dragged the zip file and text file into it, and it just sits there. What is the next step to make it upload? No command-line instructions please; just don’t know enough to do it.
Thanks.

ftp.avast.com/incoming

That is my question, I am at that URL right now, the write-only box is just sitting there with the zip file and text file in it. Is it automatically uploading to avast just sitting in the explorer window, or what is the next step to make the zip file and text file upload?

Which FTP client are you using…?

I have to assume “ftp client” means an uploading service…I do not have an uploading service. If I had one, what would be the next step?

As you quoted DavidR’s instructons in your first post…
…doesn’t it work this way…??

If not, you can use (free) FileZilla.
http://filezilla-project.org/

I realize it is awful to deal with such a newbie, but I had never heard of uploading until yesterday.

I cannot tell if DavidR’s instrx work or not, because as I said, the zip and text files just sit there in the write-only box. Do I press “enter”? Do I press the “go” arrow in the address line? Is something happening to transmit the files in the window automatically?

If transmitting the files to avast! requires an uploading service, then I’ll have to read all the instructions to even know how to use it. That is why I posted at the forum…I need to get these files to support as they requested, but simply don’t know what to do at the point that the files are dragged into the write-only window.

Thank you.

First you have to create your zip file with the unique name, containing the dump files and the readme.txt file, before you even consider connection to the ftp location. You do not have read permissions on the avast.com/incoming location, so you won’t see it has been uploaded.

Now you make your first windows explorer connection to the ftp link, now open another explorer window where you locate your unique zip file containing the dump and readme.txt files; drag and drop that file into the other explorer window (right hand side), no need to click enter or any other action.

It’s no problem at all to work/deal with you.
As Dave did answer your question in detail, I hope your problem is solved now.
If not, feel free to ask back.

To DavidR: “so you won’t see it has been uploaded”–THANK YOU!
(I’d created the zip, then opened the ftp link, dragged in the zip and text, so with your statement above, I can now know that avast! support has the info.

I might mention that I had to go to bleeping computer to get help for all the system instability I’ve had since December 2010 when I installed avast!free and then to the paid AIS in February 2011----there was insufficient response to http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=79963.0. Also, when I opened a ticket in support to get uninstall completelyhelp and a reinstall link, it seems they answer with preset text without addressing the question sent to them. Maybe you can tell me…After I use the uninstall link at http://various.abalin.net/aswClear_3.exe, when I go to manually delete the remaining Program Files and Application Data files, do I just right click and click delete? My system has been so unstable that I’m concerned right-clicking and deleting will crash me again.
To Asyn: THANK YOU also for your comment.

Well to start with I would never get an uninstall tool from an unknown source and I have never heard of aswClear_3.exe. This versions MD5 doesn’t match that of the one directly from avast.

Always go to the maker as they are the ones likely to have a) the latest version and b) a valid original version.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest avast! version, reboot.

Presumably you save the latest copy of avast installation file, if not download and save that somewhere you can find it before proceeding with any uninstall.

Any link or info I use came in an email from avast! support…I don’t know enough or trust enough to go elsewhere to get uninstall/reinstall links. Bleeping computer has attempted to help me with the system instability.

The first uninstall link they sent was http://public.avast.com/~zrubecky/aswClear.exe.
When I said I needed to completely uninstall, they sent this link: http://various.abalin.net/aswClear_3.exe.
The reinstall link in both support emails was: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

I will not attach these emails sent to me from avast!support, but I have them. That is why I made the comment; it has been difficult to communicate with support.

NP riobio.
You’ll find the actual uninstall utility here: http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe
