Hello,
I know this isnt the correct forum to ask questions about hostsman, but I couldnt find a forum anywhere else on the net. My question is simple though, how do you use hostsman? I mean I know what it does I love the idea behind it, problem is I have it installed to a usb stick and when I updated the hosts file, it made Everything slow, literally everything was slow, websites wouldnt load at all it would sit for minutes, firefox took about 3 minutes to just startup then it wouldnt load default page, even the computer itself would lock up and cpu usage was 100% and when i tried to restore it to the backup It kept saying “could not complete action Host file is being used by another program” so I had to eventualy delete every entry in it and restore it back to 127.0.0.1 localhost and everything is fine, I would love to use this prgram if i dont have the same problems i just had, any help?
Thanks
@ Justin

Why have it on a USB stick as its not very big?
The companion application HostsServer is a browser speedup proxy with its logging capability to show the HOSTS file’s effect:
You need to understand what HostsMan is:
It manages the source of HOSTS files
Featureshttp://www.abelhadigital.com
• Automatic update of hosts file
• Enable/Disable hosts file
• Built-in hosts editor
• Scan hosts for errors, duplicates and possible hijacks
• Hosts file backup manager
• Exclusion list
• Local HTTP server
If you have large HOSTS you need to disable DNS Client service and HostsServer will do that if permitted.
Thank you YoKenny
I have HostsMan on a USB stick because I like to carry apps with me wherever I go just in case I find a use for them and I prefer to not install on this computer as it has more then 80% of the HDD filled up anyways
Mainly I would be using it for
Automatic update of hosts file
Built in hosts editor
and Exclusions list
when I installed this on my USB stick I opted to not disable the DNS Client server
could this be the cause of the problem?
Having DNS Client service enabled is the problem and it is not needed.
Is this service needed? No Recommended Setting: Disabledhttp://www.theeldergeek.com/dns_client.htm
Alright, thank you YoKenny
It is HostServer that should be left running as it provides the benefits as it is a browser speedup proxy and can be set to auto start in Preferences and have Enable log and Log referrer enabled to see the HOSTS file’s effectiveness.
So i would need Hostsman installed on the computer instead of my USB stick then?
You need to install HostsMan as HostsServer is part of the HostsMan package as that is the Local HTTP server.
I just installed HostsMan on a neighbor’s XP Home system that was really infected and she was really pleased.
Download the package then keep the setup application on the USB stick to install the application.
alright, once again thank you
No problem. 8)
Yokenny…will the OS function e DNS client Disabled?
Disable the DNS client service.
