I have Avast v 4.8 installed on my HP MediaSmart Server.
I want to renew my licence. What Avast product do I need to buy?
Do I need to uninstall the old version?

The only avast product that support Win Home Server is the avast! Windows Home Server Edition.

The lastest version of avast! Windows Home Server Edition is the 4.8.257
I don’t know if avast has programmed to release a 6 version… but if you decide to renew the license, and there is an upgrade to 6 version, you do not pay for it.
