Husband disabled, now I can't turn back on

I doubt avast asks anything… avast does not asks itself to work…

Install it again now…

Tech
All I know is what he told me…

As far as re-installing when I go to add/remove programs there is nothing listed there for Avast…that is why I don’t know what to do. ???

okay, download the avast removal tool in tech’s post. If you don’t already have avast down loaded and saved, down load it at the same time as the tool.

Run the tool. reboot, install avast.

Download them to your desktop, easy to find that way.

You don’t re-install from the add remove programs.

Find the file setupeng.exe that you originally downloaded and double click on that will start the installation process.

 I’m sorry I need more basic instructions …like when you say go do this and that I don’t know what you mean. I did a search of my files and found set up file but when I click on it nothing happens. Would it be easier to just re-down load the software under the circumstances of me not knowing what to do? Sorry…

PS I just hovered my cursor over set up file and it says its empty.

Yes, that’s what tech and I have been trting to help you with.

  1. download avast and save it to your desktop
  2. down load the uninstall utility (the link is in step 3 in tech’s post)
  3. locate the uninstall utility on your desk top, double click it
  4. there should be a white box, to the right of it is a button, click it
  5. go to c:\program files\alwil software
  6. click on the alwil software folder, click ok
  7. run the utility
  8. reboot
  9. find the avast setup that you downloaded, double click it
  10. reboot
  11. don’t forget to update ;D

When you originally downloaded avast you should have saved it to somewhere on your Hard Disk, desktop or and other location of your choice, it is that which you need to find and double click.

It is important that you find the correct file as there may be many setup files on your system by hopefully only one setupeng.exe. Was this the one you found, it shouldn’t be empty but about 12-13MB in size.

If it is empty you will have to download it again, http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I assume you are using the English version, right click on the Download button next to the English version (see image), select Save As or Save Link As (depending on your browser).

Use that to install avast.

@ oldman,
If you check a few posts ago it would appear that Bethany has already uninstalled avast.

We’re sorry too… we’re trying to drive you too fast. Thanks for your comprehension too 8)
Now, with Oldman’s instructions, can you make it work or you still need more detailed info.

 Hi Bethany :

For unknown reasons, my fellow "Helpers" seem to be ignoring the SIGNIFICANCE of your
"previous virus protection....it ran out" and "no pre-existing anti-virus protection program
functioning at the time of the Avast installation" !? Even remnants of a PREVIOUS,
non-functioning antiVIRUS program can adversely affect the installation of a subsequent
antivirus program, so first things first.
What is the NAME of the previous, currently non-functioning antivirus program ? Has it been
"uninstalled" from your "Add or Remove Programs" ? Have you run its "Removal/Uninstall Tool" ?
Have you use your computer's "Search > All files and folders", using the appropiate Search
"term" and been able to "Delete" all appropiate Items ? I feel these questions need to be
answered and performed BEFORE install Avast .

Thank you all for your help!
Okay guys…back to square 1…I have a Dell which came with a trial period of McAfee virus protection service. I did not find McAfee in the program add/remove area (I may of removed it but I don’t recall??) but I did a search on my computer and found McAfee program files on my C drive. So how do I properly get rid of it?
Get a remove tool from the McAfee website I assume?
Then what, or will it prompt me on what to do?

I also found a McA spam killer folder.
The other McA folder says its empty

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe

You could try the above, but what concerns me is the word Dell, which is notorious for difficulty in removing some of its installed software.

I got the tool from McA and removed the McA files. I will work on reinstalling Avast tomorrow and report back to all my kind helpers…no doubt with more questions. :stuck_out_tongue:

Great. You’re almost there 8)

 Hi Bethany :

Now that McAfee antivirus appears to be COMPLETELY removed from your computer, it may be
helpful if you clarify WHAT you mean by "My husband and I have separate settings." !? For me,
and possibly Others, it would be helpful to know What it says when you go to your Control
Panel, then click on "User Accounts"; is someone there listed as the "computer administrator" ?
If yes, who's name is there ? Beside it should be "Guest" or some similar-type "label"; is anyone
listed there ? If yes, who's Name ?

I’ve been sick…still am…I will return in a day or so to continue with this. Thanks.

Update: I downloaded Avast again and I have my two little blue balls back 8) and everything is running A-OK.
Just wanted to say thank you to the people who helped.
I really appreciated it.

Oh by the way I have “WinPatrol” on my computer which guards my computer from unwanted stuff sneaking in and that is what my husband saw…the WinPatrol alert kept asking him if it was OK to run Avast and he kept clicking NO so some how that must be what screwed things up. At any rate I’m all set for now. Hope this Avast doesn’t give me too much trouble. From some of the posts on this forum I’m wondering.

(((HUGS))) from Bethany

I’m glad that you have finally found the source of the problem and hopefully educated your husband ;D

I trust that you are feeling better now.

Don’t worry unduly about what you see here, after all it is a support forum and people come here with their problems those many, many thousands without problems don’t make an appearance ;D and we are here to help.

For sure. To echo what David said, I’ve used Avast for years, and have never, ever had a problem with the program. I check in often to the forums, and scan the first page of issues on this forum, the Linux forum, and the General forum. I stop and read what is of interest, and comment occasionally.

I’m interested in how Avast “ticks” internally, so I’m here regularly, otherwise I’d be one of the “many thousands” who just use the program and probably not even know that this forum exists.
