Are you sure … audiosrve.dll … is correct? Without the “e” it is a normal Windows dll. Since it is indeed reported as “audiosrve.dll” then something is wrong. It is reported in your HJT log as …

… with the “e” and this item needs to be fixed. But, please wait until someone more knowledgeable than me to confirm this action. There may also be other actions that need to be taken that I am not aware of at this time.

I also have “audiosrv” and when I hover over that file file it gives a description and the author as Microsoft.But the infected file is “audiorve.dll” and when I check its properties it only says:

Also around the same time as the infection, “Security Stonghold” with “True Sword4” showed up on my computer and stated that I had multiple viruses and said my trial ran out and would require approx. $40 for the lifetime program.Is this a known/reputable company or ransomware?Coincidence or paired to the trojan?

What I’ve found about those two programs, is True Sword has been delisted as a rogue. However, if you didn’t install it and it’s asking for money to “fix” problems, I would uninstall them.

Did you by chance install/download anything by eSellerate?

I think I installed truesword previously as it is on my computer.I just uninstalled it.I just did a search of my computer for eSellerate and came up with nothing.

Yes, I meant True Sword.

Interesting. I was looking for some uninstall instructions for true sword and clicked on a link to security stronghold, avast went nuts. VBS exploit, I believe.

After you do the uninstall, let’s see what a real antispyware product can do. The free version is on demand only, but it is good.

first clean out some trash

Download and run this clean up utility. You can use it regularly. When it’s first run, it is in demo mode to show you what it will remove. Review it and then rerun in real mode. It is configurable.

First update SAS Then boot into safe mode and set SAS up like this.

Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
Then click the Scanning Control tab.

Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked

  • CHECK ALL BOXES

Return to the main page by clicking close on that screen. On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer. On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.(and other fixed drives)
Under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan.

When the scan is done, quarentine everything found . Reboot if asked. You can post the log in your next reply if you wish. You can attach log by using the additional options button on the reply page.

I ran all the Cleanup programs and downloaded and updated SAS but can’t remember how to start in safe mode.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a “keyboard error” message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
To use the System Configuration Utility method

Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the “/SAFEBOOT” option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck “/SAFEBOOT” and click OK to restart your computer

The BHO is gone, as are a couple of other files. How is your web browsing now?

If you uninstalled True Sword, you can delete these folders

C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Application Data[b]True Sword[/b]

C:\Program Files[b]True Sword 4[/b]

You should really have only one antivirus program installed at a time.

How is your web browsing now?

For your java

Open an Internet Explorer (only) window and go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp > Scroll down to “Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4…allows end-users to run Java applications”.

Click the download button on the right.

If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it’s OK to display the blocked content.

You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control

Accept the license agreement > Click on Windows (XP,Vista, .etc) Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop; do not Run it.

When the download is complete, Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:

Uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar.

Close Add/Remove Programs.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Delete any subfolders it may contain.

Do NOT delete C:\Program Files[b]JavaVM[/b] <=this folder, if found!

Reboot your computer.

Double-click on the saved file to install the update.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Could not find Application Data ?

No previous Java found in add/remove or in program files.
Browsing seems fine now.
Just out of curiousity I ran a Speakeasy speed test and got at least a 10% speed increase :smiley:

A tech guy recommended a router to “hide” my ip address to make my single computer more secure.Worthwhile?

Could not find Application Data

The folder showed up in the combofix log at the path indicated.

If running Avast! do you recommend removing AVG? Spybot? what about the tools that you had me install and use?

Your choice, though I feel avast may be better. Spybot and SAS are antispyware, so there is no problem keeping them, they won’t conflict.

I’ll get to the tools clean up in a minute. BTW you can keep the cleanup utility, use it now and then.

A router may make you more anonymous.

To clean up the tools

Click start button, click run, copy and paste this line into the box that appears, click ok

combofix /u

Open HJT, click misc tools button, slide the slider down, click uninstall. You will have to delete hijackthis.exe

Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point , click create

Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools. Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run. When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab. On this tab you will find a section for System Restore. If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

Java update go ok?
