I am having a problem with AVAST free.

I have avast I’ve had it for awhile, and now it just outta the blue stopped updating and said last time updated was 1969 and then it stopped loading up and now i can not uninstall it and it’s not giving me a window or anything. and i checked to see if it was enabled in the msconfig and everything. And I’m just confused now.

What avast version are you using 4.8 or 5.0 (for this post I’m assuming avast 5.0) ?

Have you checked your system date, day/month/year and adjust as required ?

What error are you getting when you try to uninstall it ?

Try a clean reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.545 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Thanks a bunch it worked but now it won’t update I just got a wireless router any advice on updating it?

Why won’t it update, e.g. error messages, etc. ?

We ask questions to get a better understanding of the problem, it helps us to help you, without answers we are working blind.

What happens if you try a manual update ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
