I had a hardware problem, looked like none of my USB ports were working, so I went into device manager and uninstalled USB 2.0 root hub a long with all the other root hubs.
When I restarted the computer all the root hubs and 2.0 root hub have vanished.
In device manager it says “unknows devices” with a few yellow question marks.
How can I get my root hubs back?
What OS are you using? If you are using Windows XP, you may use System restore unless you disable it.

I tried to click on “Microsoft USB Update for Windows XP SP1” (download driver). But it would not work becuase I have SP2, it says I have to have SP1.

You can install USB 2.0 drivers from your original CD that came with motherboard. That’s the easiest and fastest way possible. Browse your original motherboard CD, and you’ll find directory and drivers for USB 2.0
Take a look at my CD that came with my motherboard (see attachment). Of course your location will be different, but that’s why I told you to browse your CD… search and you’ll find them.

My drivers CD has a USB option for set up, when I clicked on set up, it asks for a windows XP cd. I don`t have a XP cd.
In my device manager, I have “other devices” next to that is a yellow ?
under “other devices” I have

Each one of these has a yellow ? next to it.
I have tried to right click on each unknown device and choosen “scan for hardware changes”. But nothing happens.
ATRAC HDD is my MP3 player!

As I already told you, you need to install those drivers from the original CD that came with your motherboard. If it asks for your original Windows CD, well, most likely it needs to download some additional stuff from your original Windows CD, because you erased that stuff when you removed USB items from device manager. Logically, you need original Windows CD too.
It suppose to come with your system when you bought it, or if you bought your Windows OS package separately… in any case, you should have original CD. There must be no system out there without original Windows CD. What happens when some system files gets corrupt on your system ? You will need original CD to be able to repair your damaged Windows installation.
Find original CD and then you’ll be able to fix your problem…
I don`t have a windows XP CD or Windows. I have a cd called “Restore” and I also have one called “drivers”. When I put it into the computer, it gives me options for:
Chip set, keyboard, sound/audio, internet/lan,
I tried clicking on chip set, there was a set up option but then it requires a XP cd, I don`t have one.
My friend has a Dell computer and his drivers CD has a option for USB 2.0 set up. When he clicks on set up, it installs.
When I click install, I get windows xp cd needed!
That’s because you have a different type of branded computer. Where did you buy your computer ? At Dell maybe ?
Then, you should call them, they have technical support and they are responsible for solving this issue. We can not help you more, when you don’t have installation CD. You have to call them (they must have one of those toll-free numbers) and explain what’s your problem. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend anyone to buy those branded computers. They don’t give you original OS CD, so if something like this happens, they will force you to buy disk from them… although you already paid for that disk.
Call them and ask them what should you do next. Have you tried to put that RESTORE cd inside your CD-ROM when you were asked to put Windows CD in ?
You could always try to insert the restore CD when it asks for the windows CD, though I doubt it would work.
would a restore cd, return the computer to factory settings ie the day I brought it? Would I loose information etc?
