i downloaded vpsupd.exe for manual update, it shows: setup cannot be started

That image is normally associated with the avast program actually trying to do an update (normally virus definitions).

Doing as it says, wait a while for the programs to complete the update before running the full vpsupd.exe (virus definitions database).
