I cant get my avast to work

There is an X over the avast logo on the tool bar. when i scroll over it, it says “avast! antivirus: WARNING, your system is unsecured” When I click on the “fix now” button, it doesn’t do anything. My Malware AntiMalware icon on the desktop is the same way–I click on it, but no response. I have windows vista (I believe). I’m pretty much a beginner when it comes to this stuff. If anyone could help me, I would sure appreciate it.

Yes, not being sure what operating system you run would place you as a beginner ;D

There is always a chance an infection caused this, if Malwarebytes is also not working (that is what you meant by “Malware Anti-Malware” I hope?). But thats a bridge too far at the moment, could also just be random glitch. First try and get Avast! running again.

To do that, try a program repair. That is done by opening Control Panel, then select Programs and Features. Once there, find Avast! on the list, when you click on it a drop-down list should appear. Choose the Repair option, then follow the remaining steps it tells you.

I would also ask if you currently have or recently removed any other anti-virus program on this PC?

just go to control panel
add or remove programs>select avast free/pro/internet security

click repair and it will repair your avast.
restart your pc.then your avast will work.
that’s all simple

Apart from more or less repeating what I just said…

…it is Programs and Features from Vista onward.

ok sorry iam using xp

Unfortunately if there are remnants of previous Anti Virus programs involved.
it isn’t that simple.
@ bovice,
Please answer Gargamel360 questions and provide any other pertinent information.
Is your system up-to-date ??? Did you have any problems with your system prior to installing avast! ???
Did you receive any error messages ???

I’m having the same issue too.
The repair option doesn’t work either. Not a happy camper at the mo.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Mortz

Have you deleted all previous AV’s including any that came preinstalled on the the system when purchased, also run removal tools to clean up leftovers of earlyer AV’s from here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ Once run reboot after each removal, then try a repair of avast again and if it doesn’t fix the problem you might have to do a clean install of avast.

OK thanks guys. I have windows vista and my avast is now working… I used the tips on fixing the program under the control panel. My mlawarebytes antimalware still will not work though. I click on the desktop icon and nothing happens. Any tips on fixing that??

Everything is working fine now. Made sure i removed any old anti virus programs that came with my computer (as suggested) and then i uninstalled avast. Re installed it and now its all working fine. Bit of a pain to have to do but at least the issues is fixed.

Have you downloaded the latest Malwarebytes (MBAM) and re-installing it ???
