I can't run the Avast User Interface

Hi! Got a problem, I installed Avast Free on Win XP yesterday and since then I can’t run the user interface. Double click on the icon of Avast on the desk causes an error: “Can’t run this application, because the configuration of this application is not right.”
There’s no icon of avast in the system tray as well.
This means, that I can’t run the avast, can’t put in the registration number, run tests, etc., although Win XP reports, that the avast is installed and running. Can someone help, please? I tried everything: reinstall, uninstall and download the instalation again and reinstall, rebooting…I reall don’t know, what could it be???

(Přijímám rady i v češtině)

  1. What version of Avast did you install?
  2. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  • If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?

Remnants from past security software can prevent proper installation or current security software from working.

  1. I installed Avast 6
  2. I had NOD 32, and I uninstalled it using the manual ont the eset web pages, which means classic uninstall and deleting left directories. There shouldn’t be any other security software.

Check this link for the uninstaller tool:
http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2116

…then reboot your machine after doing any uninstall.

After this, you will need to uninstall Avast and do a clean install:

  1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
    http://www.avast.com/download-software – all versions
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy for Free:
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
  9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know if this fixes your problem. Thank you.

Ok, I used the eset uninstaller tool, but it didnt find anz eset products left on my pc. Then I uninstalled avast using the Avast uninstall tool in the safe mode. Then I rebooted and installed Avast Free again. I tried to run it but it doesnt work. Windows reports that the avast is ready and up to date. But still no icon of avast in the system tray and no user interface.

Did you reboot after installing avast?

Look at Nr.7 of SafeSurf’s list, too.

I would run the eset uninstaller tool again and reboot. Unless you go into Safe Mode and know how to look for remnants and registries and drivers, you may miss something. See my link below in the quote for the uninstaller tool.

After running the eset uninstaller tool, follow my previous instructions for uninstalling Avast and doing a clean install again. Also, what is your firewall and other security software?

See if this fixes your problem. If not, please run an MBAM (Malwarebytes) scan:

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Thank you.
