I didn't set a password...

I just installed the new version of the free version of Avast, 5.0.594. I was making some changes and accidentally hit enter instead of 0 and it accepted everything and went out of the options mode. So I tried to go back into the options and now it’s asking me for a password. I did not set a password because I don’t need one on my computer. It is only my husband, my almost 84 y/o mother and myself in this house. Well there are also 3 cats, but they don’t use my computer.

I can’t figure out how to get in now to fix that or anything else for that matter. Could someone please help me? I tried to search this but no result quite fit my bill. I’m sure I somehow missed it.

Thanks!

If you didn’t set a password, just try leaving it blank (no password) and hitting enter.

  • Lost or forgotten user password - you can try deleting the C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\aswResp.dat file (Vista or Win7 location). Or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\aswResp.dat (for winXP).
you would have to disable the self-defence module. Delete as admin user (or use Unlocker.exe).

If that doesn’t resolve it then a reinstall is possibly your easiest solution.

Are you sure it wasn’t one of those darn cats, very clever ;D

Hi David.

While one of our cats is extremely smart 8), I don’t think she did it. She is getting on in years and would rather be near you in hopes of being petted. She wouldn’t dream of doing something to be chastised when she could be adored.

I tried with no password the first time and it said it was incorrect. ::slight_smile: My husband wants to know if there is a default password?

More than likely I’ll just uninstall and reinstall and I guess give it some stupid password as that is how I feel about it now. I never had a second’s problem with the previous version and this almost makes me regret I upgraded. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for your help!

No problem, glad I could help.

There is no default password as none is set by default. avast5 is no different in regard to the password settings though.

Don’t give it a password, unless of course you want to and then make it memorable or hide it away somewhere.

Welcome to the forums.

+1

Don’t tell your cats the password. ;D

Thanks David. I did reinstall and did not give it a password. All is well with it this time.

 YoKenny, actually I did tell them a password but it wasn’t for that program. It was for the Aquarium background so they can make changes as need be. ;D

Thanks again!

You’re welcome, thanks for the feedback.
