First avast isn’t a spam filter so it can’t do anything about receiving multiple emails. Only if they are infected email all avast can do is alert you to them, it can’t stop them arriving.
There are many anti-spam programs but it is best to get one that can delete the messages at the email server rather than download them and check them. I use Mailwasher Pro which I find great fr this, there is also a free version of Mailwasher but that only works with one email account. There are others that could do a similar job.
A free antispam tool is a good thing: spamihilator, spampal, k9, mailwasher…
But, besides the too many emails, are the email infected or clean?

It could also be that one of your friends’ machine has been turned into an e-mail spamming bot, and is now under the control of a bot-master and spammer (the spam session should last 4 days, as that is the normal term it is rented from the bot-master to a particular spammer).
