I have a rootkit MBR:\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0\partition4 .....please help me essexboy

Hello,

My computer has been infected by the rootkit named in the subject above. I will go over the chain of events:

 1. Rebooted in safe mode then ran CC cleaner. Result- the million phony windows trying to “help” me with the infection stopped, but did not identify any virus.

 2. I system restored to one day prior to the infection. Result- I can only see half of the folders on my desktop, none in my documents except My DVD. …AND there is nothing in the files that are present.

 3. Ran Avast! free anti virus and it detected the rootkit. Result- could not delete the rootkit no matter how many times I tried.

 4. Updated Avast! free anti virus, scanned, detected and deleted rootkit. I think/hope. Result still cannot access my files.

 5. Ran TDSSKiller, it saw the rootkit, and deleted rootkit. I think/hope. Result still cannot access my files.

 6. Found this forum and downloaded OTL and aswMBR. Ran them both and saved the reports, I have attached them.

Any advise or help would be appreciated greatly.

Hi there by using CC I may not be able to recover all your files

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run

Run OTL

Thanks essexboy for the prompt reply!

 1. Ran the fix. Result- most if not all of files returned, (haven’t checked everything yet), but the icons see-thru or ghost-like.

 2. Ran RogueKiller and kept to your directions, all 3 reports. Result- most of ghost-like came back! But not all.

 3. Reports exceed max character so I will attach again like last time.

Again your help is much appreciated,

Hello essexboy,

 1. Ran TDSSKiller per instructions. Result- nothing maliscious found. I have attached the reports.

What problems are now outstanding ?

Hello essexboy,

Sorry I took so long to reply, I was waiting for an e-mail alert but I guess i missed it. The system is acting fine, there is definitely folders and icons that are gone but I don’t think I want to restore to a previous date to attempt to revive them. also some icons are still ghost like empty shells. Should I delete them at this point. I am actually thrilled with everything you helped me with, I cannot express this enough!

Thank you essexboy,
Martin

Which ones are missing as we may be able to recover them. The ghost ones are system files that will need to be rehidden once we have finished

Hello essexboy,

Near as I can tell they are PDF’s, excel spreadsheets, word docs, JPEGs, in an unknown amount of folders.

I hope that was what you were asking for.
Thanks again,
Martin

OK first lets see if they are just hidden

[*] Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.

Could you re-run OTL with this scan script please

[*]Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
[*]Select All Users
[*]Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%*.exe
%USERPROFILE%..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP
CREATERESTOREPOINT

[*]Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
[*]When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
[*]Post both logs

THEN

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your Desktop. Run the application.

If no infection is found, it will produce a report on the desktop. Post that report in your next reply.

If an infection is found, you will be presented with the following dialog:
Enter ‘Y’ and hit ENTER for more options, or ‘N’ to exit:
Type N and press Enter. A report will be produced on the desktop. Post that report in your next reply.

Hello essexboy,

 1. I ran OTL. Result-it only produced one report; OTL.Txt, not the Extras.Txt
