I have Avast free version 5.0.677 the only upgrade I see is 5.0.864!

I would imagine so. If you really doubt it, just download the installation file for 5.1.864 and install over.

This is ultimately your choice. I personally have never had problems with avast! since I have installed it, others obviously have had troubles... Also you have to remember that there are many people that don't come to the forum to say that it works, being the nature of a support forum, most people will be here posting with problems.

Yes, that appears so…it redirects to CNET with 5.0.677
