I have had problems connecting to the internet since updating AVAST!

I have Windows 7 Premium. Since updating Avast yesterday morning I have had intermittent problems going online; especially to any site requiring a password. I have tried to change the Avast setting but they keep reverting back (eg changing the work network to home, using safezone for all browsing). Anyone else having problems? BTW, I am not a computer person at all and trying to avoid uninstalling Avast! (since it is not the free version) or, at this point, just reimaging my laptop back to factory.
