i have no VRBD

hi, i installed avast 4.8.1169 today. in the past there was always a vrbd along with the main program. well this time there is not one. i have checked to make sure there are not merged icons. and in the avast4.ini there is no mergeicon line, and no value to change next to it. just wondering if anyone can help me out here. there is also no menu for the vrbd when i right click on the blue ball with the a. the right click menu goes from “updating”, directly to “set/change password”. hope someone knows whats wrong. thanks daniel

VRBD is on the tray icon with the letter i in the blue circle.

the right click menu goes from "updating", directly to "set/change password"
This means you only have 2 choice you can choose from there?(Sorry i doesnt know how to say it correctly) Try make a repair for avast by going [b]Control Panel> Add and Remove Programs> Avast> Repair(If you cant find it then scroll down to the bottom)[/b]

i ran a repair on avast. still no vrbd. there is no blue circle with an i in it. no vrbd options in the right click menu. still struggling to figure out what is wrong.

Check the avast4.ini file (open it with notepad for this line VRDBBalloonShown=1 in the [UserInterface] section, it may be a bit hard to find as this section is quite large, so search for it within the file.

If it isn’t found create a new line and copy and paste the VRDBBalloonShown=1 line into the section, it can go anywhere in the section but for simplicity just put it in a new line after the [UserInterface] section label.

e.g.
[UserInterface]
VRDBBalloonShown=1

Now save the changes, avast’s self-protection will have a whinge about making changes, answer Yes.

okay, so i inserted the line in the ini file, and saved it. still no vrbd, and nothing new. i rebooted afterward. this is what that part of my avast4.ini file looks like. maybe there are things missing from the file.

i am going to try uninstalling avast. and then reinstalling it.

uninstalling and reinstalling worked. the first time i downloaded avast from the avast website, no vrdb. second time i downloaded from cnet website, with vrdb. there is about a one megabyte difference, cnet version being the larger one, between the two. so possibly the vrdb generator is left out on the version from the avast website. thanks for all the help. hopefully this will help someone else in the future.

The larger size could indicate a failed or corrupt download though avast.com is usually a better source than download.com which is frequently busy. The other possibility is that the versions might have been different which could also account for the different size (though probably not in this case).

However, the main thing is that the problem is resolved.

A belated welcome to the forums.

thanks. and thanks for the help with everthing. and the file size difference was before i downloaded them. just the size posted on each website. and yes, cnet was very slow to download from compared to avast.com, and pretty much everywhere else.

You’re welcome.
