I just got a Computer with Windows 7... HELP

Avast is the only antivirus software I like or even trust. Problem is that I am forced to keep using Norton (it came with this computer) because the computer refuses to allow me to turn Norton off and Avast on. It refuses to turn Avast on at all. I have been trying for some time now and I am feeling really frustrated. I would truly appreciate any help which could help me start using it and to get rid of Norton. I truly would. Anyone, Please Help Me…

Hi Chazz, sound’s like your problem’s are because you’ve installed two av’s on you system, go to add remove program’s and uninstall avast first then reboot your system, then on the main forum page you can download the avast removal tool and save to download’s, probably best to boot into safe mode by tapping f8 as you restart your system then go to your download’s and run the removal tool for your version of avast that you had installed, once that is done reboot again.
Now hopefully you saved your original avast download file other wise you will have to redownload it and save again, now go to the following and download the norton removal tool and save, http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/. Now go to add remove program’s and delet norton then reboot into safe mode again and run the noton removal tool that you saved earlyer and reboot again. Now is a good time to run ccleaner if you have it otherwise run the window’s disc cleaner for the moment, once done you can now install avast

Hi Chazz`963 and welcome to the forum.

Here is the Norton Uninstaller Tool from Symantec http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
. Reboot after uninstallation. Sometime Symantec leaves remnants behind that you can find while in Safe Mode. If you have problems, let me know as I am quite familiar with finding these nasties. ;D

Since you had 2 AV’s on your machine, I agree with craigb that you will need to uninstall Avast and do a clean install as well. Here is how you do it with the set up files in case you lost them:

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the product you need and save it to your HDD:
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe - (English only)
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe - (multi-language version)
    Prohttp://www.avast.com/pro-antivirus#tab4
    AIShttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall Avast 5.0 at this time.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.

  9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know how this works for you and if you have any questions. Thank you.
