Can anyone help me with this? I just installed CA Firewall, (ZA) I did not like the way my computer was with it so I removed it, I now notice that my network shield is running but are all zeros, is this the way it supposed to be? Thanks
If you aren’t attacked, the number stays in zero…
Anyway, it’s better to choose another firewall… 8)
Thanks for the info, I have a router and the Windows firewall, should I go with another type of Firewall? Thanks again for the info
Well unlike most firewalls, Windows Firewall doesn’t provide any Outbound protection, however it is a pretty simple firewall for beginning users. If you feel that you’re uncomfortable with the configurations and settings of a firewall other than Windows Firewall, you can keep the Windows Firewall for the moment. If you want to get another firewall, I suggest Kerio as your second option (Kerio Personal Firewall is free by the way):
Awesome! I just installed the Kerio firewall and it works great! Thanks for the advice,
outbound is not very useful,
Its better to rely on Avast ;D, when you are already attacked by virus, its Avast job… not firewall’s outbound. Kerio is the most memory hungry Firewal I’ve ever usedl Maybe my computer is not that fast, installing Kerio really slow down my startup time… and its very apparent.
I can disagree with you. I you have old PC (for eg. 700Mhz, 128 MB RAM) maybe it can be heavy. I’m using Kerio for about 8 months and I can’t say a bad word about it. It’s the best choise I’ve made, changed Sygate and ZoneAlarm to this one.
Kerio still working great! Start up times are same as before Kerio was installed,
to be exact, my system is P4 1.4GHz, 256MB …
I know most people now have 2.++ Ghz CPU and 512MB
Only Kerio2 or Outpost 1.0 (which is much lighter) doesn’t slow down the start up speed significantly.
I choose not to install a firewall at all, just rely on windows Firewall and Avast Home to protect my system
Oh, on top of that, I’m influenced by the “firehole” thing…the website states that firewalls’ outbound are not really protective
I have used the Windows Firewall, my router, and Avast until a few days ago I decided on maybe a different firewall, I just did not know if the Windows firewall was enough,as for me I felt as if it was but some say no, I am new at all this and just want to be safe.

The article in your link is almost 3 and a half years old “Updated 3/25/2002 8:23AM” and firewalls have advanced greatly in that time and most pass the GRC leaktest and the many other leak tests.

Windows XP’s firewall doesn’t provide full outbound protection, so your system/private data is at risk of being exported not to mention the initiation of downloads for malware. It is like a fire door that only provide protection from fire from one side of the door.
Thanks for the info,
The question I asked earlier, concerning my Network Shield being all zeros, I understood about the infected count being zero, but I have just noticed that with Network Shield running the scanned count is zero also, is this this the way it supposed to work?
If you’re using a Firewall, it should already blocks uninvited worms first so it’s perfectly fine if your Network Shield is zero. Althought Firewalls blocks them first, your Network Shield is still on Guard and ready.
Thanks for the information on that, I am new at all this, but I do know one thing, for all the helpful info all of you at Avast forum give, it is priceless, Thanks

Its 3 years ago?
But it seem to be able to trespass all the famous firewall ZA6, outpost 2.6
Only component controls can help here, well , until now, i suppose Kerio 4 is the only one to offer component control?
You have got to be joking, the article is talking about a vulnerability (leak test, component checking) that is well and truly catered for in the latest mainstream browsers.
As for “But it seem to be able to trespass all the famous firewall ZA6, outpost 2.6” what, the article or leak test, rubbish I have had many different firewalls that all passed the GRC leak test, this includes earlier versions of ZA, Outpost 1.0 (freeware version) and Outpost Pro 2.7.
Outpost Pro is widely acknowledged as having one of the best component control out there.
You are wrong in your supposition that Kerio 4 is the only one to offer component control, most of the mainstream firewalls do.
