I might be too old for avast

I downloaded avast! home (4.7) and registered. There are so many things I don’t understand…

Like: what are resident providers? I sort of get the on-access scanning concept, but don’t know how to make it work for me.

I guess it will take some getting used to. I’m sure I’ll figure some things out with time… but what is that resident provider thing? How do I activate it? And I’ve read some of the proxy-speak in the forums… I don’t get that either. Am I too dumb for avast!?

FYI: running w98se, decided not to pay for nortons anymore since this computer has seen better days, did uninstall nortons before installing avast!.

If there is a forum thread for dummies, please link me to it.

You`ve come to the right place to learn and get help

Yes, the residents (or providers) are ‘parts’ of avast that protect your system. One of them protect your email (Internet Mail provider), other the Internet (WebShield), etc. And one is the ‘master’ protection, all files in your system, all folders… the Standard Shield. They protect you to get infected on-access, all the time they`re protecting you.

Put the mouse over the ‘a’ blue icon. What can you read? The providers are turned ON by default when you start your computer.
You dont have to activate them. Its automatic.

This is very important, remove Norton completely…
For instance: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23652.msg194934#msg194934

well… the residents or providers or resident providers appear to be disabled… don’t know what to do to enable them, whoever they may be…

If there is something obvious I’m missing, please advise, b/c they are not automatically activated.

the resident bit is the part I totally don’t understand.

Still, I really appreciate you, dear Tech, for responding to my questions.

I’ll see what you or anyone else has to say tomorrow morning when I get up.

To all readers, especially you, Tech, have a lovely night/evening and best wishes from me.

another note: I think I have no providers - there seems to be no choice there for me. Does this have something to do with setting the proxies…?

Dang, I feel like such an idiot.

A

The ‘resident’ means something that is running constantly. Guarding your surfing or emails in real time.
There is also ‘on demand’ scanning with antiviruses. That means you initiate a scan, like scanning your hard disk.

Since you run win 98, you need to configure web shield. Standard shield provider you should still have already without any configuration and is protecting yout PC.

Most probably you did not uninstall Norton correctly… Look, its important to remove all Symantec products from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs. Uninstall avast too. Then boot and use the tool that David posted in that link. Download and use it. Boot. Then install avast correctly. I dont think this is related to proxies… But, wait, maybe what Jarmo posted make me think you must configure your browser if you have Windows 98.
Feel free to ask for further help if you need.

You don`t have to feel bad just because you have experiencing difficulty to manage the computer or anything else.
You must be patient, learn, use the forums, make friends

Hello bellily

Welcome to the forum ;D ;D ;D

You are never too old for new things. I know how frustrating it can be to have problems with new software, but you are in the best possible place for help.
I have Avast on both a Windows 98 and a Windows XP machine. I know that there are only 6 resident providers on 98, and unless you use Outlook for mail (not Outlook Express), you will eventually only have 4 or 5 running. You do have to follow the links posted by Jarmo for configuration of your IE and Firefox, but when you run your mouse arrow over the avast ball with the A on it, you should have some indication of how many providers you have and how many are running. If you double left click the avast icon, you should get the Avast On Access Scanner screen with all the providers listed in the left column. What does it say to the right when you click on each provider?
I also have Norton System works on both my machines and only uninstalled the Antivirus part of Norton. I have had no problems at all with this on both machines, although, many have advised to get rid of Norton completely.
I wish you luck.
