I had been using Avast! Home edition on my pc for a long time…and everything was allright, until my windows XP didn’t run anymore and I had to reinstall it over the old one.
At this point I tried to reinstall Avast as well, but I continued to receive error messages…
I contacted the help desk and in the answer they suggested me to use the Avast cleaner…
That didn’t work as well…
Now I’ve still an Avast folder on my pc that’s inaccessible and THAT folder doesn’t allow me to reinstall the program anew…
Anyone had the same problem but managed to solve it?
At this point I tried to reinstall Avast as well, but I continued to receive error messages...What were the error messages ?
I contacted the help desk and in the answer they suggested me to use the Avast cleaner... That didn't work as well...Again any errors or warnings ? Did you first try Add remove programs before you tried to 1) reinstall avast as you mentioned previously, 2) before you tried the avast cleaner ?
Are there any avast processes running in the Task manager, they begin with ash or asw, if so what are they. ?
Now I've still an Avast folder on my pc that's inaccessible and THAT folder doesn't allow me to reinstall the program anew...Again what errors or warnings, how is it inaccessible ?
If none of the above resolves this, you may have to use brute force and delete the contents of the avast folder, but not the actual folder, reboot and then try the avast uninstall utility, boot and try an install.
I actually don’t remember any more what kind of error message I got, but I know it just said the installation process had to be interrupted.
Again any errors or warnings ? Did you first try Add remove programs before you tried to 1) reinstall avast as you mentioned previously, 2) before you tried the avast cleaner ?I couldn't remove Avast with Add/Remove programs because it wasn't in the list anymore but only the folder was still on the HDD, like every other program after I reinstalled the OS...
Are there any avast processes running in the Task manager, they begin with ash or asw, if so what are they. ?Nope no avast running processes
Again what errors or warnings, how is it inaccessible ?Even the new antivirus can't scan the folder because it says: C:\Programmi\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\avast.xsl [WARNING] The file could not be opened!
If none of the above resolves this, you may have to use brute force and delete the contents of the avast folder, but not the actual folder, reboot and then try the avast uninstall utility, boot and try an install.I have tried to delete the contents of the folder: just this one folder in it doesn't want to be removed: C:\Programmi\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\avast.xsl Also with the avast unistall utility everything else was deleted, except the folder containing this xsl file. When I try to cancel the Data folder it says: DATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCE).
I understand you do not remember the error message but if you could try to install avast! again and post the error message perhaps we could help you in a better way.
Well this could be Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) failure, which if I recall indicates corruption.

Try this too to delete those stubborn files:
Unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ is also good as it also has a few additional features to not only delete the files but stop any process that is stopping you from deleting a file.
I have tried to reinstall Avast… Suddenly a pop up window appears, saying that the installation procedure can’t go on…
I enclose as an attachment the Log that appeared with the error message.
I tried with “Unlocker” but that didn’t work either! :-[
Paola I have sent you a message please check.
Hi Paola
Even the new antivirus can't scan the folder because it says: C:\Programmi\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\avast.xsl [WARNING] The file could not be opened! What " new antivirus " are you using ?
" I had been using Avast! Home edition on my pc for a long time...and everything was allright, until my windows XP didn't run anymore and I had to reinstall it over the old one. "After Install " over the old one " how is your operating system running in general, ie: any other instabilties ?
I’m using AntiVir at the moment
" After Install " over the old one " how is your operating system running in general, ie: any other instabilties?Nope, nothing special, except this "blocked" Avast folder and another "blocked" folder: Open Office... since I couldn't re-install or delete the Open Office folder they suggested me to just rename the old folder and install the program anew...in that case it worked..
Just for sure: do you have enough space on your disk?
Otherwise, if you get “CRC” errors, I’m afraid it sounds like your disk/file system is corrupted. You should run a disk check on your drive and look for errors.
