Check the size of your server defs file in alwil software\avast4\setup if it is 0 bytes then you need to redownload the server defs file. Server def file here http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Do you use any firewall?
Do you have any annonimizer (proxy) application in your computer?
;D If it is urgent, why did you logoff the forums? ;D
i check it and this file have size 1kb so what now?
I have a similar problem. My file is 9kb.
I get the error message cant select any server for downloading (from 0)
I do have a firewall, but all Avast are allowed.
It has been working until recently

Are you really sure the relevant avast! processes are allowed to connect? What firewall do you have?
Bonjour! Hi! I have also the same since two weeks.
Cannot update and receive red message twice a day showing (in french :
"Information à propos de la mise à jour en cours :
Dernière erreur trouvée : Impossible de se connecter au serveur download9.avast.com (unknown:80). (impossble to connect to server)
Temps total : 19:27 "
Who can explain such a problem? How to repare and obtain updating again?
Thank you very much to everybody know this.

Well I ahve Sygate home edition
All applications listed by Sygate as avast are checked to allow:
they are:
avast!antivirus service
avast!e-mail scanner service
avast!sevice GUI component
avast!Web Scanner
should there be more?
adding
I also tried changing the firewall setting to “Allow ALL” and it still has the error.
avast.setup requires internet access otherwise updates won’t work. The avast.setup file is only created at the time of update but this is the folder it will be created in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup if you want to manually create an application permission in Sygate.
The 1KB files size is incorrect for the current servers.def file so I would suggest deleting it and do a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
You can try and download the servers.def file and replace your copy of servers.def, instructions and location in this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=504.msg169873#msg169873.
Seems to work now, I replaced the servers.def file as suggested and it downloaded new files, then I did a manual update and it connected and confimed database up to date.
Thanks for your prompt and able assistance ;D
Glad we could help, welcome to the forums.
i dont know what is correct destination
c:/…/avast4/setup/setup or
c:/…/avast4/setup/server.def.vpu
what is good destination to replace this server list
The correct destination is where your current copy of servers.def is located and you are replacing that file and no others.
and put it in avast4\setup directory. So C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup is the correct (this is a folder) folder to copy servers.def.
c:/…/avast4/setup/server.def.vpu is a file and incorrect, if you over copied this you could have problems.
If you just delete the servers.def file and start an update, a new, fresh, servers.def file is downloaded and placed in the correct place.
I think the problem is on the firewall…
i have done correct with all and i copy servers list .
i do manual update and it was correct so i think it will be good for now i will check automatic updates soon
BIG THX FOR HELP FOR ALL
if i will have any problems i will do post
No problem, glad we could help.
Hi,
I’ve also need help to solve updating problem with Avast4. Sorry.
I saw that it must delete Alwill software/Avast4/setup/awast.setup (9kb) and then copy new and correct file.
My english is bad and I’m not at all sure I have duly understood the process to repare.
Would you precise operation, when and how new copy must be done, where can I find it ?
Thks.
Michel-Pierre
The file is temporary, created at the time of the update… this file is not intended to be manually processed.
To repair your installation go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove.
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I saw that it must delete Alwill software/Avast4/setup/awast.setup (9kb) and then copy new and correct file. You are confusing two actions/problems. 1. The avast.setup is used for the updates and must be allowed Internet Access by your firewall. 2. The servers.def contains a list of the servers to use when updating, if this becomes corrupt, usually 0KB in size then you need to replace it.
The first thing to do is ensure your firewall allows access to avast.setup, this is more likely to be the problem if your C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file is 9KB (8,744 bytes), which is the correct size.
