I need help...things aren't connecting...

I have gotten rather aggravated with my PC…my mother had so many security programs on here when she gave me the PC…it’s not funny…it’s also a windows 98 Pentium 3 with upgraded memory(so there’s plenty) and 100GB total HD space…still functional, but rather obsolete at the same time.

Currently, I have Avast, Winpatrol, Spybot SD Resident, and Norton AV(disabled because I can’t get it to go away) running. The PC also has NIS Pro 2003 on it…but as far as I know it’s not running…although there are a few norton/symantec things on the startup menu…but I can’t figure out what they are. There’s a few other things too…Panicware Pop-Up Stopper is on here…but I don’t keep it running…

My problem is that Avast and Firefox won’t connect to the internet. Avast gives me the message about the auto update not connecting, and firefox just sits there…I got a (this document contains no data) message once…but other than that it just sits there with the waiting for (insert name).com thing going…it’s got the proper proxy configuration soo…what do I do? Are these problems even related? (I’m not very literate in software matters…so if anything is explained…treat me as if I’m an idiot)… ???

firstly welcome to the forums ,
your biggest problem as i see it are with remnants of norton on your system you will have probably gotten a bad install of Avast! and therefore have conflicts .
firsly i suggest http://spyros.atspace.com/uninstall.html to remove NAV

Thanks ;D

That’s just the problem…mom doesn’t want it gone…I don’t know why because the subscription ran out a long time ago…I’m not even sure it will come all the way out…it has NAV and NISP both…it’s even integrated into the recycle bin…

If you cant help yourself then there`s not much we can do to help you. Unfortunately more (AV) is not equal to better. :-\

No kidding… So there’s no way to simply get Norton out of the way?

if you cant run those uninstallers then it will not allow Avast to install properly.

crap…

 In addition to Tech’s recommendations, I would encourage
you to use your computer’s “Search” feature, clicking on
“All files and folders” and using the search “terms” of
“Symantec” & “Norton” & attempt to delete everything it
finds. And to get rid of the last “remnants”, use a SAFE
registry cleaner, such as the FREE “evaluation copy” of
Registry First Aid available at www.rosecitysoftware.com .

k…guys, I have mom’s ok to get norton off of here, but dang…I need help. There’s more than just NIS-P and NAV on here…this thing has norton systemworks(2000)…personal firewall…liveupdate…intrusion detection…I don’t know how many other symantec applications…I can’t even begin to try to uninstall it…I can’t get rid of systemworks without getting rid of live updaye first, and I can’t get rid of live update without first clearing out all the other symantec stuff…and I can’t even find those on the add/remove programs menu…nothing there even mentions symantec…help me please…x_X

Edit: Holy crap…I ran msconfig and looked at the startup menu…though disabled, there are also several Iomega programs on here sighit’s integrated into norton too…

Edit again: Norton system doctor too…

There should be uninstallers for those products in ADD/REMOVE programs .It could be that there are uninstallers within the individual programs if you were to access them through the start menu.
If that is not the case then perhaps you should visit one of the links indicated above and you will probably find a tutorial…
Good luck

k…thanks…I’ll need it

Another link worth looking at which is a program removal tool, which can remove a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Any use of this/these tools should be after using any windows add remove entries.

T_T…there are missing DLL files so systemworks’s uninstaller won’t work and I can’t get nisp to start up so I can log in and uninstall it …everything else goes wih that soo…I’m screwed…

If you still have the installation disk or disks that came withit you might need to re-install/overwrite the installation just to enable you to then uninstall properly. It wont matter that its expired, it should still install enough to let you do what you need.

I would…that would help…but this stuff came from all over the place…that Iomega stuff for example, came with the software for my zip drive…lord knows where that cd is…much less the 4-6 others…I think with all the problems this pc has it’ll be best just to back all the files up and wipe it…it just has too many problems…windows 98se, almost 6 years old and has never been wiped before…you can imagine everything that’s going on with it lol
