I have tried to renew my avast subscription a few times, but I still get that red alert message in the bottom right of my screen saying i’m not protected.

What version of avast are you using (I take it that you aren’t using the server version of avast) ?
What have you been trying to renew your subscription ?
I would remove your email address unless you particularly like spam, this is a publicly available web site so could be trawled by spambots collecting email addresses. You should get an email notification of replies to your topic/posts.
