I need professional support, avast doesn't update!

Can I have some professional support here:

Today my computer was trying to update to that new version, yet when it finished a red box popped and let me know it couldn’t get updated. I tried going on Avast! itself and updating it, but when I did, it just showed a message “Package broken” and it didn’t complete the update. What do I do? :-\

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??

Free Avast, it says that the current version is 7.0.1456 but it still says that the update wasn’t completed, I’m running on Windows 7 64 Bits, and I have no other security software, over the years avast! served me right, so I thought I’d keep this one exclusively.

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Err-… Are you sure about that? Shouldn’t I just wait a day or two and see if the updates start running again?

I would not suggest waiting because then you would not get the virus definition updates. We are now getting flooded with a LOT of users getting viruses/malware of all kinds. I would follow the directions given to you. Perhaps you just got a corrupted update and this will fix the problem. Would you rather do this or go through the bigger problem of removing malware?

Yes.

Right. One question though, what’s rebooting? Just… Restarting the computer?

Yes.

I’ll get on it now then, and let you know how / if it worked.

Alright I just did everything you guys told me, and it worked! I’ve also tried updating, after the automatic update, and it worked too. Thank you very very much, I mean, I don’t know if other programs would have provided such a great support, again, thanks a million!

You’re welcome.
