I need suggestions for security and cable internet

I have used Earthlink dial up forever and want to get cable internet. I recently installed Avast and want to know what else I need to worry about to secure my computer. I don’t know what cable modems BrightHouse uses for lite Roadrunner and don’t know whether this is a security issue. I am under the impression that I could buy my own modem. Earthlink scanned all emails before I downloaded to Outlook.

I don’t want to introduce too much at once so planned on waiting on getting a router.

The first computer to be hooked up is running XP and due to dial up, the only updates that I have permitted to take place is Avast. I also keep Mozilla up to date.

Suggestions please?

avast, MalwareBytes Free (Pro is a one time $25.00 cost), and a good firewall.
A lot of us use third party firewalls with HIPS http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/hips-explained.htm
