Once you have uninstalled it via the control panel and rebooted, it’s a very good idea to run the Uninstall Utility in case anything remains that needs cleaning up. Reboot again afterward, then install the new one and follow any steps it suggests at your discretion.
Many AV’s have this sort of tool available.
All the files you need to uninstall/cleanup/install the new one should be downloaded and saved before removing an antivirus, so that you can do it offline.
