I need to learn how to do a back up the right way

You’re talking about making a backup with Macrium?
And I guess you are at the point where it says " Choose a local directory, network, or removable drive to contain the backup image".

If so,
What are you trying to backup the image to? Have you plugged an external drive or DVD in? If so, browse to it.
If not, you need to.

I have a DVD player in the computer. i can watch any DvD i put in the computer. so it should already have what it needs. it plays both dvd and cd and that part is in a grey area and can’t click on it. i am also wanting to put a backup on a disk. got to run will be back in the morning i am right at the point you thick i am
thanks Sharon

If you right click on the “my computer” icon on the desktop, and click either “open” or “explore”, is the DVD/CD drive visible?
Should be similar in appearance to my screenshot. The names, and possibly the locations, will differ.

If you intend to use DVD's to back up your System then you need to make sure your DVD is capable of writing to a DVD. Reading alone will not help you when it comes to making a back-up.

morning to you Targ and every one els. or i should;g say good night to some like targ.
there a little bit of difference to start off with, just enough to confused me some times. I use to click on my computer just like you to start with. now I have to go to start then click on computer. after that if I put a blank disk in and click autoplay and the menu comes up and you can click on create disk or edit image and it will open up and you will see a blue square box that Say’s cyberlink DVD suite Deluxe it will have 7 icons under those words. one of then being copy and backup under that you will see watch a DVD. I am not sure if I have to use that to start the backup or not. under that you can click on watch a DVD.
i am not sure when you say click either “open” or “explore”, is the DVD/CD drive visible?
where I put the DVD or CD has to be visible maybe you might be talking about the little blue box that is visible. if your not talking about that I am not sure what you are talking about. in the other post you can read what it says about where I am at after when i can click on macrium refelct.
thanks Sharon

I am not sure how to fine this out can you explane how? I think you are using window 7 if I remember right. i am using windows vista on a HP computer.
Thanks Sharon

I use all windows operating systems between the various systems it use and maintain.
The type of system doesn’t matter.
If your DVD can’t write to a DVD then you can’t use it as a back up tool because you can’t burn DVD’s with a DVD READER.

Most Optical drives have some indication on the front of the DVD Drive, mine has DVD RW (read Write) on the front of the loading tray.

If you use My Computer, View System Information, Device Manager, then find the DVD/CD-ROM Drives and expand that it too should say what the drive type is, see image. Now that is for XP Pro, you will have to find the same/equivalent in Vista.

maybe mine is not setup to do this kind of backup because looking at Device Manager it has a disk drives witch has the Corsair Flash voyager USB Device and WDCWD12OOBEVS-60UST0ATA Device. it has nothing that says DVD on it. all I really wanted to do to start with was to learn how to do a backup on a disk or two. because all I have been doing is copying certain things from the computer to a disk not knowing really if I got all I needed or not. thanks every one for the help so far at least i am still learning some thing.
Sharon

What does it say at the front of the drive, where you put the disk in?
The set of numbers/letters suggest that your CD/DVD drive is by Western Digital.
Should be on the computer spec sheet/pamphlet somewhere, if you kept it.

I’d suggest an external USB or Firewire Harddrive, then use Windows Vista’s built-in backup program to schedule backups. It’s free, and very simple to use. The only problem is that you won’t be able to backup exe files and other things that are self-executing. However, documents and everything can be saved. Also, entire disk images can be saved as well, so you can restore the entire PC back to how it was when the backup was ran.

there is a little I cannot see even with my glasses and a magnifying glass. it is hard to see but the bigger letter I will write. a big R W word next to it is DISK then DVD under the big RW is little litter dvd r w under the big DVD is a little dvd. then under the last ones is rewriteable muttl recc the rest of that word I cant see if you need that too. I will see if I can read it in the morning I think there is just a few letters I cannot see. I cannot get the computer box down tonight to see any of the paper work in the morning I can get that to.
I hope what i just gave you help some. that little print i don’t know how any one see that it is the tinyies i have ever seen.
till tomorrow
thanks Sharon

where would i fine the USB or firewire harddrive i don’t have the manual for this computer but i do have the book on a disk
i will look threw nit tomorrow too.
thanks Sharon

It sounds from the bits you’ve been able to see as if that is a read/write dvd drive.

The USB drive is any USB port on your computer.

Did you try opening “my computer” to view, as per my picture? What is there?

then under the last ones is rewriteable muttl recc the rest of that word I cant see
Are you looking at the computer or the DVD's? This sounds more like a description of a rewritable DVD not the description of the actual Player.
where would i fine the USB or firewire harddrive
You can purchase them in any store that carries computer equipment.
I not sure what is going on here yesterday when I went to computer after I click I saw	only 3 things I thought there there should be 4 things there but all I saw was local disk HP (c) HP recovery (D) and corsair (F). this morning I see one more DVD RW Drive (E). remember I have windows vista I don't click on my computer I have to go to go to start then click on computer.I look in the box for the paper work and done was there of corse mike thinks i put it some where and i think he has it on the back porche where bhe keeps every think like that at. i will look at the user guide in a few min

thanks Sharon

DVD RW Drive (E)
DVD Read/Write (Drive E) Now all you need is to buy some Blank DVD's and start doing your backup using one of the programs suggested to you.

I already have blank DVD
thanks to every one and I should have look at the user manual before because I found this. just one more question why yesterday was the E drive not there but today it is? .
I red below and it say you have to have a certin kind of disk.

on my disks it's 120min video 4.GB data one the other side of disk it say's DVD-R 1-16 speed do I need to tell every one what is wrote all around the disk? I sure hope this is the kind of disk I need. I said just one more question i was wrong i lost count of how many i just asked every one. one quetion you do not need to answer i reread and yes I do have the right kind of disk.

8 Backup and recovery
Recovering system information
Tools provided by the operating system and Recovery Manager software are designed to help you with
the following tasks for safeguarding your information and restoring it in case of a system failure:
● Backing up your information regularly to protect your important system files.
● Making a set of recovery discs (Recovery Manager software feature). Recovery discs are used to
start up (boot) your computer and restore the operating system and software programs to factory
settings in case of system failure or instability.
● Creating system restore points (operating system feature). System restore points allow you to reverse
undesirable changes to your computer by restoring the computer to an earlier state.
● Recovering a program or driver (Recovery Manager software feature). This feature helps you reinstall
a program or driver without performing a full system recovery.
● Performing a full system recovery (Recovery Manager software feature). With Recovery Manager,
you can recover your full factory image if you experience system failure or instability. Recovery
Manager works from a dedicated recovery partition on the hard drive or from recovery discs you
create.
Creating recovery discs
After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recovery discs of the full factory
image. The recovery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recover the operating system and
software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.
NOTE: Handle these discs carefully and keep them in a safe place. The software allows the creation of
only one set of recovery discs.
Note the following guidelines before creating recovery discs:
● Use any of the following types of discs: CD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R or DVD-R DL (purchased
separately). The discs you use will depend on the type of optical drive installed in your computer.
Because DVDs store more information than CDs, DVDs and DVDs with double-layer (DL) support
reduce the number of discs required.
NOTE: Read-write discs, such as CD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW, are not compatible with the
Recovery Manager software.

: The computer must be connected to AC power during this process.
Only one set of recovery discs can be created per computer.
Recovering system information 131} another question it says one time recovery disk I guess that has nothing to do with backing it up. i guss i should do that to but why will it only let you make one? if i make a mistake doing it the 1st time can’t try doing it again.
thanks Sharon

Recovery CD’s are not the same as a system backup.
Recovery CD’s are used to restore the system to the way it was when you first received it from the manufacturer.

it said backup and Recovery disk that is what had me fooled
thanks Sharon
