IBM will not use Windows Vista - but will move to Linux desktops
During a presentation on IBM’s involvement with Open Source, Andreas Pleschek from IBM in Stuttgart, Germany, who heads open source and Linux technical sales across North East Europe for IBM made a very interesting statement…
“Andreas Pleschek also told that IBM has cancelled their contract with Microsoft as of October this year. That means that IBM will not use Windows Vista for their desktops. Beginning from July, IBM employees will begin using IBM Workplace on their new, Red Hat-based platform. Not all at once - some will keep using their present Windows versions for a while. But none will upgrade to Vista.”
The question is, does this only apply to IBM in Germany, or IBM world wide?
If ALL of IBM switches to Linux desktops and OpenOffice… that would be a very significant loss to Microsoft; not only in direct licensing revenues, but also in speeding adoption of Linux by other companies. After all, if IBM can run on Linux desktops…
If IBM do this worldwide, it would go a long way to break the Windows/Microsoft monopoly. Who knows it may even make Bill G rethink his pricing policy for the OS, considering we don’t own the software when we buy it only a license to use it, the prices suck.
If IBM does this worldwide then not only will IBM be hurting Micro$oft but other companies such as HP and Dell might decide to do this as well, all I know is that Micro$oft better rethink because if IBM does this alone they will still take a big hit.
Actually I hope IBM does this, it will make microsoft come up with some idea of their own instead of stealing everything (ie vista: OS X’s expose and dashboard features are now integrated only under a diffrent name and IBM sees this as apple was a long time partner)
and also commend Dell for selling Linux now as well, Heck even Michael Dell himself said that he would sell OS X if Apple allowed it.
Dell has some Great Computers nothing aginst them its just the Operating system.
Bob, Im not trying to make Apple anymore appealing to anyone here unless they ask me to tell them the pros/cons and Windows has a big advantage over mac - Games
but mac has many more but thats getting off topic…
I just like to put down MS at every chance i get thats just me
A lot of people like Mac but cannot change because there are not as many applications as there are for Windows. If Apple had made their codes available to developers many years ago then Apple would be owning more then 90% of the OS market not Microsoft (that is my belief) but Apple did not and because of that they are where they are today. Also this may seem like a stupid question but does IBM not using Vista mean that you cannot buy an IBM with Vista on it or does this only apply to what the company itself is using?
Meh, I think companies are beginning to see a lot of choices, and there seems to be a sharp rise in competition (opensource, google) which hasn’t seen before. I foresee two options; first microsoft takes the notice that people are realizing they aren’t confined to one choice and begins to put more effort into their operating system that gives users benefits - out of charity (seriously, think about that for a minute, I know it is weirdly worded). The other option would be simply the slow downsizing of Microsoft’s monopoly into a more competitive market (long-term).
