Icon in the systray

I have 4.1 Home version and I have a little problem. For some time, when Avast scans an outgoing e-mail, there’s no more icon in the systray.
When, I receive e-mails, the icon appears.
Can someone tell me why?

I use Windows XP French home edition with multi-users.

Sincerely.

Excuse me, but there’s no icon too when receiving e-mail.

Here is some precisions.

I’ve started the computer with user A ( avast stats with Windows XP french Home Edition ).
I’ve changed from user using “Windows” key + L. From this user, I’ve send an e-mail with attached files ( 2 files for 200 K ). Result : no icon.
I’ve changed the user to A. The messages are well received ( icon in the systray when analyzing them ). I’ve replied to the message ( icon in the systray when the messages are sent ). No problem.

Return to user B : no icon when receiving the messages.

When changing from user, the settings are not changed.

When the messages are received by user A, in the header, I have “outbound message clean” and “inbound message clean” telling me that Avast has scanned the message and there’s no virus.

I hope it can help. Sincerely.

Are you sure the icon is not hide by XP at system tray? You can configure XP for hide some or all icons in system tray…

If I understand you, you have the ‘a’ blue icon (merged or not with the ‘i’ icon) and only from time to time the second (or third) icon of ‘email scanning’?

Into avast settings you can configure the last icon as you may know…
All icons and its configurations could be set directly into avast4.ini file. More information about the avast4.ini file you can see here.

No the icon isn’t hide by Windows XP : I’ve clicked on the arrow in the systray to be sure, and no icon.

The icon appears only with the user that was used when starting the PC ( A in the previous case ). It doesn’t appear with the other user.

In the avast.ini, I have ShowTrayIcon=1

I’m not sure if clicking the arrow is enough… doesn’t the “Hide inactive icons” taskbar/tray option hide the icons even “more”, such that clicking the arrow isn’t enough?

No Igor, my ‘Hide inactive icons’ just hide them and do nothing “more”.

gtaillandier, can you say us if the avast services are running and set to start automaticaly with Windows?
Administrative Tools > Services … search for: avast! Antivirus (formely, C:.…\Avast\ashServ.exe) and avast! iAVS4 Control Service (formely C:.…\Avast\aswUpdSv.exe). The second one is not preceptive to be running.

Yes, these 2 services are automatically started with Windows and run every time.
There’s no differences between the 2 users : automatically start ; why I don’t have the icon only with the user that is not used when starting my computer ?

Do you installed a second antivirus program even in the past?
What do you do after logging the first user?
Which account do you use for them: administrator or limited account?

Just a guess, if you run “C:\Program files.…\Avast\ashDisp.exe” will the icon appear at the system tray?

Do you have this program marked to automatically load in Windows Registry All Users? (Do you need help to go there?)

If I do Ctrl/Alt/Del, I see 2 ashDisp.exe ( 1 for each user using the computer ).

In windows registry, I have under the following key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
avast! and in data c:\progra~1\alwils~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe

Is it OK ?

Yes, everything seems to be right…
What the hell does your icon disappear? >:(

It’s the icon when messages are being scanned ( incoming or outgoing ).
Not the icon of ashdisp.

I can confirm this problem. The icon is not displayed probably because the mail scanner (ashMaiSv.exe) runs under different user account than you are currently logged on. We’ll look what can be done about it.
