Sorry - I’m a bit lost here - just joined - I replied on another msg as couldn’t sort this out.
OK - I use Avast on my PC with XP
Just installed Avast for a friend and it has SP2 installed now. Previously the Avast spinning ball was in the system tray - now its gone.??? (Its not hidden either)
Also
I cannot figure out how to get the scanner to show up when mail is being received.
Please give me some simple answers.
marge,
Ok, I will try to provide as simple an answer as I can.
Make sure that you have the latest version of Avast…459.
The mail scanner icon is set by option in the Internet Mail Module/Customize/Advanced tab.
However, to get to it, you need the A ball icon, so let’s try to get that back.
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove.
Find Avast and double click on it. An options menu will appear. Go down the choices until you see “Repair”.
Click on it and let Avast check its’ files and fix any that are corrupted. Then reboot the computer and try again.
If the icon now appears (should be the A and the I icons)
right click on the A ball and open the On Access Protection Console. Find Internet Mail in the left column and open it up by clicking on it.
Then, go into Customize/Advanced and check the little box on the botton that says “Show icon when scanning mail”
That should do it. If you can’t get the A ball to appear, let me know and we will look into the problem further.

Thanks so much - I’ll try that when I visit my friend and see if that fixes - thanks for explaining simply.
Following on from this yesterday - you will realise how little I understand here - am I in the right spot - we both have on our PC’s the free Home edition.
So I just tried following your instructions thru Control Panel - Add/Remov. Avast and I do not get an options menu - just change/remove???
Would it be better to uninstall Avast now that SP2 is on, and do a fresh install and see if that bring back the icon in system tray???
Thanks Margaret (or direct me to where I should be asking questions)
You will not get an options menu unless you have clicked on the Change/Remove button, did you?
Ok - hmmmm no I didn’t cos I was a little anxious that it would remove Avast off my PC - so I will try it on my friends. Thanks - I’m also confused on Versions - you said to make sure I had 459 - I think
This is what I have today
0451-1 so should we have a different version?
Thanks so much
You are mixing up the program version and the vps version.
Latest program version is 4.5.549
Latest vps version is 451-1
Right click the blue ball with the “A” and choose “about” to see them.
