I have enough junk in my system tray, that’s all I need is the avast! icon there too.
I really like avast!, but one thing I loved about AVG is that it only showed its icon when it was doing something or found something. For example, if I install something, the icon would show while it scanned that new app, and then disappear when it was done. It was nice to see it actually doing something from time to time.
I disabled the avast! icon and installed something and the avast! icon never appeared. It makes me wonder if avast! is even doing anything at all. Even with the icon enabled, I have no sense that avast! is doing anything or just showing a static icon.
Lastly, that avast! icon is huge! Can you shrink it down a bit so it’s not so obtrusive?
The notification icon behavior will change in the future as I mentioned in the other threads. Avast is doing the same job with or without the notification icon, it’s just better if the icon is there in some occasions (as said by Tech, the OS tries to kill everything it thinks is not needed, the icon prevents that behavior, avast is not getting killed without the icon, but takes a bit more battery to keep it alive).
Surely an option could be easily implemented where there are mutliple icons available, and one of them is a 1x1 pixel transparent square; ie. it is ‘there’ to stop Android killing the app but it doesn’t waste valuable status bar space for those of us on devices with smaller screen.
