After the avast icon in the tray stopped rotating I un-installed the program and re-installed it again on my laptop. Worked initally and now seems to be frozen again.
Q: Does this mean I do not have protection or how would I activate this again?
No, it does not mean that. The rotation of the icon is just an external signal of antivirus protection, not the protection itself.
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I’m using XP and I did not have this problem before as long as I am using Avast and that has been a few years.
No, I do not have any other Antivirus programs.
I’ll try the “repair” you were suggesting.
Will let you know and thanks for your response.
Exactly… if you do nothing, avast won’t scan nothing, the icon won’t swirl.
So, everything seems ok, don’t you think?
The icon just rotates when avast is scanning (a webpage, a file, a script, an email…).
FWIW, didn’t really uninstall from the laptop but did the “repair” only, rebooted and voila the icon swirled after reboot already which it had not done for about 1 week, hence my signing up to this forum.
Will check later on what it does when I’m connected to the internet through my laptop.
Thanks for your help so far.
Happy to announce that I just tried the laptop/Internet and the icon swirls like before. I didn’t uninstall just repaired - to my disgrace didn’t even know that there was a feature like that :-).
Thanks again.
BTW have used the Home Version for a few years and absolutely thrilled.
