I don’t know if this was mentioned before, but Firefox has an extension that enables you to open chosen pages in Firefox using IE. You can go to Windows update without opening IE, and it works.

Hi ro ro,
Although this works, I still think your safer opening IE rather than using this plugin
because of the issues described in their website.
Known Issues:IE’s ActiveX enable/disable settings do NOT work
All popup windows open in a new IE Tab
Navigation history list does NOT work
Site’s favicon does NOT work
Memory Leak problem
I did see they had some problems, but I did open up Windowsupdate and it worked fine. I will see if any bad stuff happens. I don’t really use IE often, just for things that won’t download with any other browser. Maybe the creators of the plugin will straighten out their problems soon.
BTW do you mean by SAFER that I may get some virus or other nasty that I wouldn’t get if I opened in IE? Also what does Memory leak problem mean? The other Issues I can live with.

In terms of security, ‘safer’ is bit odd since I believe it uses IE’s engine. So, probably he meant that IE doesn’t have these issues original with the extension or add-on. In fact, I use a browser with IE’s engine rather than the extension.
However, I agree that the customizability including extensions is a charm of Firefox. I wish extensions had more integrity but, at the same time, I found some ideas are brilliant, which even makes Firefox more than a browser. My favorite is Foxy Tunes and GMail Space. Answers is convenient as well. I download extensions only from official Mozilla site for security, though.
My take on Bob’s comment “I still think your safer opening IE rather than using this plugin

I don’t think he means safer as in less likely to get infected in any way.
Thanks for the response. For now, I will try the extension but if I see any crashes etc that it causes I will delete it. I happen to love the Firefox extension Forecastfox and use it all the time and I just discovered Smiley Xtra which is fun. Of course I use Adblock, and noscript too.

I think it would be wise of us since I don’t think there is a reason to do everything exclusively with Firefox. At least, in my case, when I think it would be convenient to use IE, or more strictly speaking, its engine with Maxthon, I simply use it.
That said, there are still quite many browsing conveniences and funs offered by its extensions.
