All was well the day before yesterday when I shut down my PC; some updates from Microsoft were flagged as requiring installation so I hit the button (as you do). Since then, IE6 flatly refuses to browse the Internet, acts as though working offline recommending I check my connection settings. All other elements of my connection work fine, I can use other browsers to look at web-pages, I can FTP files, send e-mail etc… only hiccup is Avast which no longer picks up updates.
Probably won’t use IE again for a while, but the loss of Avast updates is a pain. Says error has occurred while attempting to retrieve updates. Bloody Micosoft What’s going on, and how do I make IE work again. Something to do with the ActiveX update I presume? Can anyone help?
avast’s updates don’t require IE, so it is something other than that.
I did all the updates required on patch Tuesday and I have no problems connecting, browsing or updating avast. The activeX updates shouldn’t have this effect, you should be able to use your browser (if IE) without problem as there has been a 60 day reprieve to allow for webmasters to modify how their web site uses activeX so this problem doesn’t happen.
What errors are you getting when trying to update ?
What is your firewall ?
You should be able to uninstall the ‘Cumulative Security Update for IE’ KB912812, see image. This however, comes with its own health warning after uninstalling, rebooting, you will be vulnerable to any security fixes incorporated in that security update; the activeX issue was only a small part of that update and really should have been a separate update. There is also no guarantee that after the install it will resolve the problem.
I suggest you don’t do anything hasty (use a different browser), like uninstalling a security update, etc. Do a google search for ‘cant browse internet with IE after security update kb912812’ without the quotes and see what that brings, you may need to modify the search terms to get better/more info by that should get you started.
John, avast does not update by (or even use) ActiveX.
Which version of avast do you use?
Can you check your proxy settings into avast and let them for ‘no proxy’ (and not the automatic one) if you’re not using a proxy to connect?
Which port is set to be scanned by WebShield (avast provider)?
Thanks David. Uninstalling the security update did the trick; IE now works and Avast! now picks up updates. No doubt this may well have a knock-on effect in the future in terms of system updates.
I use 4-6-763, port 80 is set to be scanned and, sorry to be dim, how do I check the proxy settings? :-[
If your ISP uses a proxy I believe you would know about that. The check the proxy settings, right click the avast icon and select program settings, Update (Connections) and click the proxy… button. If you don’t use a proxy check the ‘Direct connection (no proxy),’ if you use one then set it accordingly.
RamblinRose has a problem elsewhere on this forum where she mentioned a forum where this showed up. 'Rose also has an HP printer/scanner so her problem may surely be related to this since it apparently involves HP printer/scanner software.
If you don’t use a proxy (don’t count web shield’s local proxy), it is best to have Direct Connection (no proxy), it is just one less possibility, auto-detect could screw up if there is an issue with IE.
