iexplore.exe - application error 0xc0000005

Since updating Avast Internet Security to version 6.0.1203 and doing the reboot, I get the following message when I start MS Internet Explorer 8:

iexplore.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly 0xc0000005 click OK to terminate the application.

I have a MS Windows XP SP3 system with an Intel Pentium 2.8 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. All updates current.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I also tried the free Avast version and had the same results. The error always happens after the reboot of the computer. When I uninstall Avast, IE works. I am currently using Firefox at the moment as it does not seem to be affected by the 1203 update.

Would appreciate any advice on this matter.

Thnx,
