iexplorer keep getting "File Download - Security Warning" dialog box

Hi Avast experts

I have downloaded the Avast Home free edition (build Jul2005 (4.6.691)) and I have started getting the dialog box: “File Download - Security Warning” when ever I open a webpage with IEXPLORER NOT with firefox ???.
I have narrowed it down to cover the “Webshield” provider - when ever I pause that, I have no problems at all.

I am behind a proxy but that usually does not cause any problems.

Hope you can help since I am a big fan of Avast antivirus

Thanks in advance

Hi there! Well first please tell us what’s your OS (Windows 2000, 98, ME, etc.)

Make sure you clean out all your temp files and cookies.

What is the offending link? Or does it happens on all web pages?
Can you post a screenshot of that message?

sorry for the delay guys.

My os is XP with all patches up to date… I had to uninstall avast (tried to reinstall but still the same) since this was causing to many problems…

Cheers

… and it was for ALL webpages…

cheers

You could just terminate Web Shield. Antivirus itself would be still fully functional untill we solve the issue.

It has definitely something to do with your proxy. Perhaps the proxy adds some uncommon header that confuses avast! and causes this unwanted behavior.

You say you are behind a proxy. So how is your WebShield and browser configured? Do you have your proxy server and port set in the browser and do you redirect the proxy port in WebShield?

What we would really need is the full dump of the communication.

Here: (http://www2.asw.cz/~rypacek/ashWebSv.zip)

you can download a special WebShield version that creates a detailed debug log. Terminate webshield and replace it’s file (ashwebsv.exe) with the downloaded one. Then try to reproduce the error (with webshield started). It will create a log file in c:\program files\alwil software\avast4\data\log\ashwebsv.dbg. Send me the file by email.

Note:

  1. the log file is accessible only when WebShield is terminated
  2. you might want to backup the original version and replace it back when you finish testing (if you don’t do this the file will be automatically replaced during next program or VPS update)
