I’m retired, but repair or build computers at home to keep busy. I’m currently working on a PC that was unable to boot up because it had so many corrupt, or malware infected filces in it, Managed to get it running after cleaning up the malware and restoring corrupted system files. The owner of the PC has Avast Pro installed and fully updated. I started getting a very bold Red & Black popup message indicating Avast Pro is Illegal, that pop up a very random times. It offers to sell a one year legal license for $9.99, a two year license for $19.99, or a three year license for $59.99. When I run Avast Pro, it indicates that “Everything is Good”, Everything is up to date", and “All shields are active”. I’m a bit skeptical, so am hoping someone here can tell me it the Illegal" message with offer to buy new licenses is not something bogus. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What operating system/service pack?
What exact version of avast is installed?
If it is not version 2014.9.0.2007, I suggest you use avastclear to remove the current installation and perfrom a clean install of the latest version.

Thaniks for the reply Eddy,
Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
avast! Pro is version 2014.9.0.2007 - virus Definitions 131104-2
Reason I’m wanting to know if avast! Pro pops up an “ILLEGAL” license warning message, with offer to buy a legal license for the prices quoted in my original post, is to determine whether I need to contact the PC owner about her antivirus software being illegal, and to ask if she wants to buy a legal license for the prices offered.
If avast! Pro doesn’t have a warning popup as described, I can assume the warning message is bogus, and I need to do more cleanup before returning the PC to the owner. Other than that occasional warning popup, avast! Pro indicates there are still 300+ days remaining on the current subscription, it updates definitions as it should, and seems to be functioning as it should. I’ve contacted avast! tech support by phone and they were no help at all. As far as removal and reinstallation goes, IF the warning popup is legit, I’ll contact the owner to find out if she want to buy a new license,
The warning popup is not bogus… it is legit. However, you need to speak to the person who owns the PC if they actually did pay for a license or get it from a pirate site. It’s either illegal or the person who has used the license has exceeded the amount of PCs it is registered too, for example, using a 1 PC license on 2 PCs.

While the popup sounds legit those prices certainly sound suspicious. A better contact to
ask would probably be Avast! sales, rather than Tech Support.
Nope, those prices are legit too. I’ve known someone who done this and got exactly this.

I suggest you use avastclear to remove the current install and do a fresh install after that.
Let’s see if that solves the problem.
And as far as those prices… They are not normal.
