I upgraded Avast yesterday to v.4.8 and I haven’t been able to download anything from the internet, ie programs I want to install on my computer. I read I had to go back to a previous version but I don’t know how to do it and I can’t download it either.
Are you able to browse the internet (if not see below), if so there is something else going on as avast isn’t a firewall so doesn’t block, but scans content and alerts to infection if present, but doesn’t block. What other security applications do you have installed ?
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.
After a program update the providers will have changed so that should cause the firewall (if it provides outbound protection) to challenge the changed processes, but it shouldn’t block unless you have it setup that way.
Yes, I can browse the internet. I just get blocked when I want to download something, even an upgrade.
I use Avast and I think the firewall is included in Avast. How can I see if it allows ashWebSv.exe to access the internet?
Then I think I’ll need guidance for the following :
“If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.”
Thanks again for your answer, it’s been very helpful.
Does this mean you had an earlier version of Avast that worked before the upgrade, or did you upgrade from another brand of Antivirus program to Avast. If the latter is the case, how did you go about uninstalling the old product?
What operating system are you using and do you know what service packs have been installed?
What Browser do you use e.g. IE6, IE7, Firefox 2, Firefox 3?
Is your PC free standing or part of a network?
How are you connecting to the internet e.g. dial up, Cable, ADSL ?
What other security software or suites do you have installed e.g. Norton, Zone Alarm, SpybotSD, Comodo.
The more information you can provide, the more likely it is that someone will be able to provide you with a solution to your problem.
Sorry, I meant I updated Vista and subsequently Vista Firewall. I also updated Avast on the same day, and realised I couldn’t download anything afterwards. In both cases, I followed the warnings I received when I turned on the computer (after 3 weeks holidays).
I had Avast installed before and upgraded to the newer version of the program v.4.8 when I was asked to install the newer version.
I usually use Firefox 3. When I realised there was a problem, I tried the same thing with IE7 and I got exactly the same warning.
I use a PC free standing and I am connected to ADSL. Apart from Vista Security and Avast, I also use Spybot and Adaware.
You don’t need to do that as a) the web shield is not being blocked and b) your firewall doesn’t provide outbound protection by default, so that can’t be blocking the web shield.
What is the full text of these warnings when you can download ?
My problem is that I can’t download anything from the Internet (via Firefox, nor IE), it seems that the automatic updates are possible but not if I choose to update CCleaner or Spybot or any other software.
The message I get is the following :
“ce téléchargement a été bloqué par votre politique de sécurité”
==> This download has been blocked by your security policy.
control panel>internet options>security>custom level>
under Internet explorer there is the option for
launching applications and unsafe file
this should be set to prompt,
somehow the install of FF3 threw this to disabled on my computer and started this issue , switch it to prompt ...i did it and all is fine now....
peace.
Thought it is strange that this IE security setting would effect firefox, so you might have to check some of the other google hits.
So that message seems to be for Firefox, I would assume the one for IE might be slightly different and as such a different google search on that might reveal more information.
