Impossible to update the Program

A friend who is facing problems with Avast asked me to post this and will appreciate your help:
Since quite a few months I’m not able to update the application. When I click on Update the application it starts to check, then starts to install the update and then goes back to checking for update again, and it goes round and round in this cycle.
The only solution is to download that big offline installation file, uninstall the avast and reinstall it again.
Is there any other fix for this problem?
Right now I’m running v. 24.5.6116 (build 24.5.9153.844) on Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit
