Paul, welcome to forums…
Web access cannot be blocked from time to time. There is something wrong into your avast! installation.
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?
Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing. If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I’ll reimage to a clean backup later this evening and install it again to make sure. On this test I was not able to start again straight away and this may have caused a problem.
Also, tonight I have done a bit of switching between accounts using Fast User Switching, which may be the other factor.
BTW: The website could do with more detailed information - I am seriously considering buying the professional version, but I can’t find any information on what the difference is in detail.
For example: yes, script blocking is nice, but the website does not say if I can configure it or not (I have startup VBS scripts that would need to be exceptions. Ditto for other features - it would be nice to know what can be configured.
Another example - will I be able to configure email protection to collect all email and then tell me what happened, rather than have to sit there clicking dialogs all the way through?
For these particular areas, check out the Help files. Unless this has been changed in a recent version update, both Home and Pro use the same Help. A little confusing sometimes if, like me, you have the home version and find instructions for features you don’t even have, but of course it’s a lot simpler for Alwil plus simpler for you if you upgrade/downgrade between the two.
Not a problem here… I do use the switching and nothing wrong.
Sorry the silly question, was avast! installed by the Administrator or by an user with Admin rights?
Did you change any security settings (permissions) of that user? Is it an Advanced or Normal account?
In Home version you can only use Silent Mode:
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon.
It will start On-access protection
Click on Internet Mail and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the default answer No. This will send the file (email) to Chest.
Do the same for the and Outlook/Exchange plugin.
The answer Yes in Silent Mode keeps the virus in the file or into the message (attach) and continue the scanning. You can’t configure ‘delete the infected file’ in the Home version.
You can do the same for Standard Shield provider, but it won’t be a good idea…
Silent mode in the case of the WebShield provider simply means that avast will keep pressing the “Abort connection” button for hte user automatically.
Isn’t the web browsing problem related to a memory leak?
Can you check the memory consumption of the ashWebSv.exe process when the problem occurs (you can’t browse)?
