In need of advice

Hi I know this is probably not the place to post this but I need some people I trust. I’ve been going through the internet for a couple of days, looking for internet connection problems. I’ve contacted my ISP loads of times now there saying its with my windows ??? each time I try and connect I get timed out or can’t find the server. I tried systems restore and it won’t go back to the time before thisstarted going wrong what can I do??? bar kick ,scream and pull my hair out help please I’d be greatful :-\

What happens if you pause or Terminate the Web Shield provider ?

If you are able to connect and browse then it might be your firewall blocking Web Shield. What is your firewall and does it allow access for ashWebSv.exe ?
If it does allow ashWebSv.exe, delete the entry for it in your firewall and connect again, it should ask permission for web shield, ashWebSv.exe.

 Hi “On” :

The previous time you posted in this forum was last Dec, so it might be best if you
 started by telling us the NAMES of the programs you have on your computer;
it would also be helpful if you told us the NAME of your OPERATING SYSTEM !?

Hello sorry I forgot thats me at the end of my teather.I have windows XP, avast, spybot, ewido, ccleaner, spyware doctor, adware and sygate but I noticed sygate won’t run I thought that would be because there is no connection as avast is going nuts for updates. I don’t like going into files I don’t know but I want to learn how to fix my computer. When my ISP was trying to help they got internet explorer up but no pages then the errors came back. Oh and the computer is saying its connected at 100.00mbps throught ethernet.I was wondering if its a file that got infected and I moved it to the chest if so what would I be looking for? ???thanks

Hi Ontheedge,

It might be worth trying WinSockXPFix:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Thanks freewheelin frank I’ll give it a try I’m on someone elsescomputer so with running back and for this may take sometime ;D I’ll let you know

:'(Hello everyone sorry to say the winsockxpfix didn’t work looks like a good program though. Where do I go from now its just the same box that comes up timed out or can’t find the server. Have I lost a windows file? if so how do I get it back I’m still hopeful.

Try checking the hosts file for suspicious entries:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

If you find the hosts file contains anything more than the following, please restore the hosts file as described in the article.

127.0.0.1 localhost

As you are having problems with Sygate, I would uninstall it and make sure Windows firewall is on, or preferably install Kerio or Zone Alarm Free. (Sygate is no longer supported.)

Try a registry scan with TuneUp Utilities, which has a free trial:

http://www.tune-up.com/

Please also post a HijackThis! log so we can have a look for any malware entries that might be causing problems.

Hi it won’t let me on the internet at all and I’m not networked I had to put xp on a disk and run it I don’t know how to get to the web pages I’m using someone elses system just now sorry :-\

I would uninstall Sygate since it is not starting, it sure seems some conflict. And then turn on XP firewall.
If that does not help, the cause should not be a firewall. (Unless you have some other firewall or remnaints of it in your system.)

Then I would check avast’s webshield settings, possible disable it etc. …
If you have an email client set, you should try it. To check if you can send and receive email, since it uses different ports than browser. Then it would be a browser restricted problem maybe.

You can also phone your ISP and ask some of their server IP to ‘ping’ with cmd command prompt window , to see if you have any connection at all.

Hey guys guess what something you said worked I knew to come here it works every time thank you your stars and I won’t go away for so long this time  ;D

Your welcome.
Now all we need to do is find out what it was ;D

Hi your right it seems like winsockxpfix got sygate back then I uninstalled it restarted and I got a connection then I put on zonealarm free just incase. What should I do now? systems restore still isn’t happy I was wondering would that be because I’ve had trojan swizzor, trojan agent and trojan agent BNP there all in the chest since july and I checked there all still alive I’m scared to delete incase I break the pc again :stuck_out_tongue:

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot.
  4. Use a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware, SUPERantispyware or Spyware Terminator (trojan removers).

What do you mean by ‘systems restore still isn’t happy’ ?
What do you mean by ‘I checked there all still alive’ ?
Do you mean they are still found to be infected whilst in the chest or do you mean they are back on your Hard Disk ?

The fact that they have been in the chest since July would indicate that even if you deleted them from the chest it is unlikely to have any effect (though it won;t hurt to leave them there). Files in the chest, if they were critical you would have known by now as they can’t be accessed in the chest.

The same is true of deleting/disabling system restore, it isn’t an active folder but a back-up of stuff already deleted, etc. So the same is true of that if it is in system restores System Volume Information folder your computer would have been complaining already and may have been what you have now resolved.

Hi DavidR sorry for confusing you you can see my computer taik isn’t very good I mean that there still in the chest I read one of the other posts about false positives and tried that but found all of my viruses were still active. There is about 13 that was in the volume information but now I’ve got your answer I understand I can delete them as everything is ok. Can you advise me on how to go about learning more on fixing computers I found this scary but interesting thank you again.

Right click the files in Chest and scan them again, are they infected? If so, most probably they’re not false positives but real virus.

If you disable the System Restore feature all restore points (and infected files) will be deleted.
You can enable System Restore again after booting

You’ve started in a good place: avast forums

Hi sorry took so long in the middle of moving house multi-tasking is hard. I’ve got mt systems restore back but my avast is still red and not getting updates says it can’t find the server.I know I’m not getting pages on IE but bt broadband is getting through.Could it be bt yahoo anti-spy I can’t find in on add and remove just the bt applications is in there any ideas :-\

Basically, check:

  1. If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

  2. If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired).

  3. If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

  4. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

 Hi Onthe edge :

I recall others having problems using "BT Yahoo Anti-spy"; you would be better off
getting rid of it, then choose one of the "trustworthy" ones recommended by
antiSPYWARE Expert Eric Howes at :
 www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#trustworthy .

Yahoo Antispy MAY be in your "All Programs" !?
