I always to make sure to scan using Malwarebytes and Avast. What should I do to prevent .pup files from infesting my computer?
PUP are not infections
PUP = potentially unwanted program → https://www.virusbtn.com/resources/glossary/potentially_unwanted.xml
avast PUP detection is default off exept for in boot scan, so if you want pup detection, turn it on
see screenshot here, you must do this in all shields wher you want it on

a malware expert will check your logs and assist you later today
What problems are you experiencing as I can see no PUP’s
- Keep the pup detection in avast enabled.
- Only download trusted applications.
- Use common sense.
Thank you for all the replies. The reason I posted on the forum was because in the span of 2 weeks I found close to 15 PUPs. I know that they’re not exactly malware every time, but they keep popping up. Normally I would suspect it was something I downloaded, but I haven’t downloaded anything on this laptop in over a year. I wanted to know if there was something else wrong or if it was just a false positive.
You don’t have to start a download yourself.
Websites also can (try) to send you things without asking.
Since Essexboy didn’t found anything suspicious in your logs, I is likely that your browsing habit is causing the alerts.
Thanks for the response, Eddy. I try to be as safe as possible, I already use the avast app for website reputations, adblockers, ublock, and the virustotal site to check URLs, but is there anything else I could do to stay safe?
We recommend avast + MBam (=Malwarebytes) + McShield.
If you want to scan things online, have a look at my website.
I have a decent amount of online scanners listed there.
URL’s(websites), IP’s, File, Ports and other things.
Thanks again Eddy, I’ll look into your website for online scanners ![]()
They are not mine, only the site is ![]()
Let me know if :
- A link is not working
- A scanner is under the wrong sub-menu
- You have a suggestion for a scanner not (yet) listed
etc.
